Simply put, San Francisco is one of the top travel destinations on the planet. The clanging cable cars, Victorian row houses, quirky neighborhoods and gorgeous waterfront make this city by the bay many people's favorite. One of the best ways to experience San Francisco is to live like a local for a day. Rent a bike and head into Golden Gate Park. Drop by to stroll around the Japanese Tea Garden or visit the California Academy of Sciences (this being San Francisco: the world's greenest museum, with a 'living' roof). Cruise over to the Ferry Building and slurp down organic oysters, and munching local cheese and sustainably grown fruit for lunch before catching a ferry to Sausalito, Tiburon or Alcatraz (even locals love 'The Rock') for a quick ... jaunt. After eating yet another local, sustainable meal (think heirloom tomato salad, duck confit, truffle risotto) for dinner at any one of SF's eighty gazillion neighborhood restaurants, find a late-night cafe and talk politics, take a streetcar to AT&T Park for a Giants baseball game, check out an indie band or just pick a neighborhood and explore.
Bring a jacket to San Francisco. Especially in summer. The heavy fog rolls in around 3 or 4pm and can make temperatures drop to bone-chilling levels. Temperatures during the rest of the year are mild, and September - November are the sunniest time to visit, it's still cold at night but pleasant during the day. Spring is a close second-best time to go; winter can get damp and rainy, so, while it's no monsoon season, bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes.

Without getting into a discussion concerning the relative merits of Los Angeles and San Francisco let's just say this is one of the cities that makes California a great place to live.

Wonderful city to visit! Got to come for a work conference, then stayed for a long weekend. Definitely check out the Ferry Building, take a ride to Sausalito, and see Fisherman's Wharf!

San Francisco is obviously one of my most favorite cities since I live here. It's really quite beautiful with the cute Victorian houses like the Painted Ladies, the cable cars, the Pacific Ocean, and rolling hills.

The weather is always predictable. It's cool and breezy, so dress in layers, but we have very little rain, so expect dry days.

The food scene is phenomenal. You'll find food from every cuisine from around the world, made with some of the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. Everything is organic and artisinal...almost to a fault.

We have some fascinating sights like Alcatraz, and some cool museums, but it's more a city to relax, explore the neighborhoods, and take in the culture. We're a funky city with lots of unique festivals and "Only-in-San Francisco" type of events, so try to come May through October when the city really comes alive.

San Francisco makes a wonderful vacation spot too with so many day trips / side trip options as well including Napa/Sonoma Valley for wine tasting, Santa Cruz for the beach boardwalk and forests, or Tahoe for for the gorgeous lake or skiing/snowboarding.

San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Towering hills, sweeping views of the water, cable cars, the golden gate bridge. There is so much to do for visitors you could spend a week and not see everything!

I may be biased, as I reside in San Francisco, but it is truly a beautiful city, and all the more fascinating because of its storied history (given that it's a West Coast city).

San Francisco is the nation’s second most densely populated city, second only to New York. Having survived a four year bout with the bubonic plague between1900 and 1904, the devastating 1906 earthquake and the ravages of fire a year later, Fog City resurrected from the ashes to become a global financial center.

Being a city, there is lots to see and do. By all means, begin at the beginning—at the Presidio, a Spanish fortress, built in 1776 on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, west of the city. The decommissioned base is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a reserve protecting 80,000 acres of shoreline, Alcatraz Island, and the Muir Woods National Monument twelve mile north of the city with its span of old age coastal redwoods.

The park also manages historic sites, one of which is the Sutro Bath ruins, once a huge privately owned oceanfront public saltwater pool. Perched on the cliffs west of the Presidio is an ocean front restaurant, Sutro’s, with unbeatable dining views. It’s located in the Cliff House, a neoclassical replacement for the grand Victorian chateau that had dominated the bluff prior to the 1907 fires.

The Great Highway, the park’s western border, is a north-south highway running along the Pacific from the Cliff House to Merced Lake. Besides miles of beaches, the scenic road brags two working windmills. Dutch Windmill stands at the north end of the byway, whereas Murphy’s is in the southern section. Two street cars run from the highway to the city, the N Judah which begins on the eastern port side of the metropolis and services tour sites such as Fisherman’s Warf, the Transamerica Pyramid, and Haight-Ashbury. The second is the L Taraval line passing through the colorful Castro district before landing on the coast at the city’s zoo.
And, if you’ve not yet been, do note that the Golden Gate Bridge that links the city with northern California isn’t gold; it’s red. The “Bay Bridge” connects Oakland and the satellite communities to the east with San Francisco.
Sausalito’s historic houseboat community with expansive city views lies to the north, directly across the Bay.
