Great farm-to-table restaurant. All of their suppliers are local. Half price bottle of wine on Mondays.

I had an absolutely exquisite dining experience.

We started with the shishito peppers. They were cooked perfectly with a sweet glaze that was so good, I used the house bread to mop up the plate. (Side note: Bread is my favorite food, so I look forward to the complimentary bread at most meals. The bread here was fresh and served with a delicious white bean hummus. Win!) Then came the beet and fried squash blossom salad. This was very good, but not a showstopper. I'd recently been to an event where Red Door's chef served an out-of-this-world stuffed pumpkin blossom, so I think that colored my impression of this dish a bit. But still, it was a solid option.

Then came the main event, and the must-order thing on the menu that I'll be dreaming about until I return: the lamb meatballs. I know it doesn't sound like the most exciting dish, but trust me, it's a flavor explosion. It's perfectly seasoned with some sort of pesto or aioli that gives it a nice kick, and balances out the earthiness of the root vegetables it's served with. And there's feta involved. Need I say more?

To top it off, we split the banana cream pie for dessert. As you can tell from the picture, this isn't your momma's banana cream pie. Weirdly enough, the crust was my favorite part (it was that good)!

San Diego has a lot of great dining options. But I really loved that The Red Door provided high-quality food, without the pretense. We went on a Friday night but found parking without issue, and there was a really relaxed, homey vibe inside. It's gorgeously decorated, but not at the price of comfort. I'll definitely be back!

Fantastic fresh local produce from the Red Door Garden. Since all of the veggies and herbs are picked fresh from the owner's City Heights garden, the salads were phenomenal. We also enjoyed the city style chic decor such as the hanging plants and wall of newspapers. The shrimp were cooked to perfection in the Shrimp Slaw Frumpling Salad as was the char grilled Autonomy Farms Burger. I was just disappointed that I didn't save room for the alluring Meyer Lemon Goat-Cheese Cake. Next time!

The Red Door has a focus on farm to table food. The produce served here is local and organic. In fact, the restaurant sources from their own garden! The restaurant gives a spotlight to the one of the greatest produce producing regions in the country.

The restaurant is of a modest size. Dining areas are separated into three different spaces. A bar area where the entrance is located, a middle room to accommodate larger parties and a main dining room.

Ambiance inside the restaurant is dark and moody. The middle room is interestingly covered in newspaper articles. While the main dining room is furnished with books to give it a sophisticated look.

Tried out a couple salads here to start along with the house bread. Tried the fried green tomato salad and another salad (Red Door Salad?) that had some bacon it. Both were great. The fried green tomatoes were tasty covered with pesto as well as squash blossoms with goat cheese that accompanied it. The other salad didn't need much to please since it had bacon to begin with.

The house bread here was okay. The eggplant spread that accompanied it was nice, but I thought that the bread would have been better lightly toasted like a crostini.

As for my dinner entrée, I got the Duroc pork schnitzel. Even though I did eat a hearty fried chicken & biscuits dish at Craft & Commerce for brunch earlier. I feared this might be fried food overkill and a path to heartburn city.

Fortunately, the breading used for the pork schnitzel did not overdo it. This is not a fried pork chop. It is breaded, but not so much that is the only thing that you can taste. The taste of the pork was able to come through in the dish. Pork was juicy and moist as it should be. The sides were tasty too. Notably the Peruvian potatoes and chard.

If you are looking for a great restaurant offering local farm to table food in San Diego, The Red Door is an awesome spot.

The ambiance is comforting, modern but old-world. The menu filled with Mexican fusion inspired tastes. If you're lucky chef Miguel will stop by the table and say hello.
