This place ain’t called “A Wyndam Historic Hotel” for nothin’. Immediately upon entering the marble-drenched lobby, I was bombarded with framed photos of everyone from John Wayne to my personal heroine Lucille Ball glitzing it up in the very establishment I was standing in. The fancy pants here are on another level as far as reputation go. I was jazzed. Sadly, though, the rooms were stuffy, the TV’s had some serious junk in the trunk and a tiny screen to boot, the bar and dining areas were none to impressive and overall, I think this place could use some modernizing. It’s great to go and say you stayed there purely for the historic value, but honestly, as far as style and modernity go, this is not it.

Chandeliers. Marble. Statues. Museum-quality furniture. Historical relevance. These are all the things I should be writing about.

Of course, it's a world class hotel for the deep pocket business overnights. But there is something much more significant, and it comes in the small frame almost too easily passed by in the front lobby.

The St. Anthony Hotel was host to John Wayne during his filming of The Alamo (in which he directed and starred). His ten-gallon and spurs traded in for tux and tails, Wayne is seen as the magnetic presence in the grand front lobby in 1960. It's as old world as the hotel is today.

It almost feels like I should have bought a ticket for admission upon entering. It was as uncomfortable as it was beautiful. The vintage mail drop boxes beset by the hauntingly empty former telephone booth rooms. I can't help but feel the claws of the old world as it faded to further obscurity.

I left the hotel and entered back into the needle-jerk park, with it's stark homeless tweekers waiting for the sun to set and the next day to begin.
