and the best example of a colonial city in the Brazilian Northeast. It was a convergence point for European, indigenous and African cultures, all of which have left a lasting mark. UNESCO deemed the city's historic center worthy of a World Heritage Site designation.

Very old and interesting slave port town! I had a chance to visit here on my Brazil trip back in 2003 during the carnaval. We enjoyed the festivities and participated one night in the carnaval in a samba group called CocoBambu.

I love this place, the atmosphere here is incredible. Make sure to visit the old San Francisco church, covered in gold.

We really enjoyed walking around this area (the upper city) with numerous shops, restaurants and interesting buildings. It was only a couple of weeks since carnival and most of the elaborate decorations were still up. Busy, colorful and unique.

Favorite part of Salvador, the portuguese colonial period is still so vibrant here! And there are some of the best souvenir shops in some of the old church and colonial style buildings. Thursday night in the best night to go out in Pelrorinho too, everyone is there, and its always a party in Brazil :P

Bahia's historic center, known as Pelourinho, is a hotbed of culture and activity. I arrived during the Santa Barbara festival, a celebration mixing Christian and African religious traditions with the Brazilian love of partying. All through the nights and days I was there, I heard random music (drums, guitars, voices) streaming out of open windows. The center is small and can be seen in a day. It is also home to some fantastic food, including Bahian favorites like moqueca.
