Saint Kitts and Nevis Holidays

If you're looking for a Caribbean beach and hiking vacation with a side dose of history and culture, come to this dual-island nation. Sugar production dominated these islands for over a hundred years, and there is nothing like sleeping in a former plantation windmill-turned-honeymoon suite. Wild birds, lush flowers, hiking trails and historic ... Read more
buildings are omnipresent on both islands, as are the African vervet monkeys. Despised by locals and loved by visitors, the monkeys are reputed to have hitched a ride with slave ships, immigrants or pirates, and now outnumber the humans (watch your drink; several have developed a taste for alcohol). On slower and gentler Nevis, pass the time in a Victorian carriage tour around former sugar plantations or discover its history at the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, at the largest collection of Admiral Horatio Nelson artifacts in the world (the Museum of Nevis History) or the 1778 Bath Hotel, Caribbean's first. St. Kitts is the larger of the two islands, in population, tourist numbers and area. Beach bars serve up drinks made out St. Kittitian rum, an island delicacy.

I just recently got back from a trip at Nevis! I absolutely loved it! I definitely recommend traveling here! Even though it is far away, it is worth the travel.

This is both the original and yet the newcomer in the Caribbean. St Kitts was originally famous for it’s larger hotels. But new properties are whisking the islands into a luxury category to rival the best. Leading the pack is Belle Mont Farm Kittitian Hill, just weeks opened. It’s rumored to bring the jet-setting elite in a new wave of chic. The development of a new state-of-the-art marina will bring added berths. And a luxurious new private airport terminal, the YU Lounge, offers an exclusive enclave for paying customers to retreat airside. This sets the scene for an exciting Caribbean renaissance.
The advantage of St Kitts is sister island of Nevis, just a 2km stretch of water away. Montpelier Plantation Inn is a timeless elegant classic. This sanctuary of peace is set in a 60-acre estate high in the hills of Nevis.

When I was in St. Kitts we stopped at this beach. It's called Shipwreck, there are tons of jet skis. The beach is calm enough to snorkel.

These are Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. They are very pleasant and like most small islands we spent most of our time on the beaches and snorkeling. The people are friendly and the weather and water are terrific.

I love adventure travel. Death-defying bus rides, adrenaline-inducing sports, fully immersive cultural activities. And, the older I get, I love me a good ol' fashioned vacation, where I can wind down from my life instead of wind up from the thrill of travel.

You know what I love most about St. Kitts? You're actually in a country, not just the Caribbean, you know? You can take public transportation. Go catch a movie downtown. Make a few friends with Kittitians.

And, at the same time, you're in the Caribbean-Caribbean. White sand beaches, tropical drinks, resorts where your most pressing demand is whether you want to swim in the ocean or the pool that day.

Perhaps it's not the most beautiful island in the Caribbean (actually, it's not), but you're spending less money and will have more adventures. Nevis feels more like the picture-perfect Caribbean, and has a fascinating history (there are three good museums on this one tiny island). Spend a day at Brimstone Fortress. Visit (or, if you can afford it, stay in) sugar plantations. Take the 'city' bus. Take the campy tourist train. Dance. Eat lobster. Pet pigs at Turtle Beach Bar & Grill (find out when cruise ships are coming and avoid these days).
