Description
Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva was given its name because it was believed to have been built over a Roman temple that was dedicated to Minerva Calcidica. Construction of the church lasted from ... Read more
1280 until 1453. Looks are quite deceiving as you walk up to the building. It is when you open the front doors that your jaw will drop in astonishment of the beauty this church beholds. Original artwork climbs from the floor to the ceiling. Take a brochure at the entrance to learn about the lives that have lived and the artists that have contributed to the splendor of the church.

This church holds quite a hidden gem as it is home to one of the renaissance master's sculptures.
The Risen Christ a beautiful sculpture by Michelangelo is here in this very church. A naked and muscular version of Jesus holding a cross still allures art lovers from around the world as it's quite an impressive sculpture.
Not so far from the Pantheon, it isn't hard to find.

While there are churches beyond counting in Rome, there aren't many good exampled of Gothic architecture. This basilica is a definite exception. Don't let the barroque exterior confuse you, this was a late addition that covers up the Gothic interior. Also checkout Michelangelo's Christo della Minerva

Gothic church administered by the Dominicans next door. Contains Christ Bearing the Cross by Michelangelo (fig leaf added later), the crypts of St Catherine of Siena, Medici Popes (Leo X & Clement VII), inquisition leader Pope Paul IV and others are here. Beautiful ceilings. Large frescoes by Filippino Lippi. Lots of history in the church.

The Basilica of Saint Mary above Minerva is a minor basilica and one of the most important churches of the Roman Catholic Dominican order in Rome. Behind a plain facade, its arched vaulting is painted with brilliant red ribbing, and blue with gilded stars, a 19th century restoration in the Gothic taste. The basilica is located on the small piazza Minerva close to the Pantheon. In front of the church there is one of the most curious monuments of Rome, the so-called Pulcino della Minerva, a famous Bernini elephant sculpture, a base supporting one of the eleven Egyptian obelisks in Rome.

Santa Maria Sopra Minerva a Michelangelo statue of Christ holding the cross. You can go right up to the Michelangelo statue and touch it, unlike the Pietà in St. Peter’s which is behind bullet proof glass. Outside the church is a Bernini statue, a small elephant with a small obelisk on its back.

As Rome's only Gothic cathedral, the feel of the interior of the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva is quite different from the other churches in Rome. I particularly loved the blue ceiling. Artistic must-sees include Michelangelo's Christ Bearing the Cross at the left side of the nave's end, as well as Bernini's Elefantino sculpture outside.
