Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and also its largest city. It is located in the center of the country on a highland plateau, a situation that results in extreme hot temperatures year round, even spiking above 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The country’s conservative nature reduces Riyadh’s destination appeal, as there are few attractions and most ... Read more
entertainment is banned. The most common visitors are businesspeople and government employees, but that does not mean the city is without interesting sites. Masmak Fortress is a beautiful fortress with historical value and the National Museum is as modern as they come and exhibits many beautiful traditional Arab works. Also popular are dune riding trips, done in SUVs or on ATVs. As it is a large city, Riyadh is home to a wide array of dining and lodging options. Popular among locals are the small Pakistani restaurants that offer exceedingly cheap and filling meals.

Saudi Arabia’s thriving capital is a must-visit. Far more accessible and friendly than we expected. The people are happy to have visitors and the government is working feverishly to develop historical sites and build infrastructure. The architecture is a highlight but the real draw, for now, is the opportunity to demystify this fascinating country.

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia. There are many historical places to visit in Riyadh. However, because of their religion there are many prohibitions. Women cannot travel without wearing an abaya or the black clothes and hair should always be covered. Also, make sure that you take with you your marriage contract because you cannot check in in any hotel without those documents.

It is in the desert and it can be hot. Westerner lived there for three years. No night life and frankly not a readily accessible tourist destination. But it has its beautiful parts like the old city walls etc. The souq shopping can be a lot of fun. Good luck getting there.

Riyadh is not as bad as you might think.. in fact it is not at all what you would think from outside the country. The place is one large strip of Malls, Offices and high rise tower blocks. English signs compete with Arabic ones and nobody walks anywhere. The desert makes itself known by the incredible dry heat that rips the moisture from your skin, hair and everywhere else, and the dust that can blow in with storms so that you feel like you are walking through an orange Fog which clogs your eyes and nose. This is a city of business and nothing else, made harshly obvious by the fact that everybody is here to work, not play, and so there is very little to see or do. Of course hovering over it all is the Kingdom tower, known affectionately as the Giant bottle opener, constantly reminding you of the lack of legal alcohol
