Local from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Casa Beleza is a beautiful B&B hidden away on Rua Laurinda Santos Lobo in Santa Teresa. It´s air of exclusivity is enhanced as you wont find any signs outside or advertisements like other hotels and even the other hostels on the street say they are unable to give out the number... giving the impression that over the large white walls with barking dog must lie something interesting.
Casa Beleza has a large garden area with many benches so you can stop and soak up the atmosphere. This B&B is ideal for couple looking for somewhere quiet to relax away from the hectic parties of Zona Sul.

When staying in Rio the temptation is to throw caution to the wind and book into one of the big beachfront hotels - the easiest way to burn a large hole in your wallet. We discovered this place on a recent return visit and for those prepared to sacrifice a waterfront view for good value, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. The colonial style building though only dating from the 1960s used to be the home of the state governor, today it's run as a B&B by a musician and film maker - the setting the charming hillside area of Santa Teresa, with an abundance of bars and restaurants just a short walk away. From the moment you walk through the gates of the place, you're transported to a relaxing oasis a million miles away from the frenetic party atmosphere of other areas. The lush gardens (and there's a pool too) a great place to stretch out in and chill with a good book. If you're lucky you may even spot wild toucans or one of the owners' pet tortoises. Best rooms in the house are the loft suite or bungalow - both very spacious. The beaches are a short journey away, so this is a place which will appeal first to culture vultures, rather than beach bums. If you want to enjoy a really different side to Rio, this is a great place to consider.
