Riga Holidays

The Daugava River bisects Riga, the right bank hosting Old and New Riga-basically, the entire city, and on the left bank (known as "Across the Daugava") the suburbs. Once known as the "Paris of the East" Riga is the heavy hitting metropolis of the Baltics, full of Art Nouveau architecture, a UNESCO recognized Old Town, and black balsamic liqueur. ... Read more

A little rough around the edges, Riga is a wonderful affordable city. You money will go a long way here, making this a great alternative to other pricier Euro cities.

Riga is a place where your experience will depend in large part on WHEN you choose to visit. Bubbling with concerts, street-life, and more than its fair share of partying in the warmer months, Riga can often seem a bit shriveled in the cold, when its lovely outdoor spaces aren't being put to their best use. Year-round, however, the old city center is beautiful, the beer IS in fact very good, and the women quite lovely. Time your visit right and you'll have a great time: it's a place best experienced as a social city.

Rīga is a nice Latvian town, although most people are probably interested mostly in the old town section. I found plenty of places for nice runs, the parks are clean, and the old town busy and full of energy.

I am so thankful I didn't delete Riga from my european trip itinerary. Riga ended up being my most favorite city out of the Baltic States I visited (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia). The buildings were gorgeous, the town was lively, the people were super nice. I can't put it in words, Riga is just an amazing little town. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more publicity for tourism. I heard that Riga is the "it" spot for guys from Scandinavia to come out to party (bachelor, birthday,etc.,). Now that I've been there, I can see why!

The city is okay. They are attracting business and tourist. The bus and hotel services are very good. A small airport. The smoking room of the airport is really good.

Riga is very interesting because she is actually quite modern but yet she is mostly known for her beautiful architecture in old town. Walking down the cobblestone streets is fascinating because you may look inside one of the stores and the decor is so modern, it doesnt match the fascade.

But the ultimate display of her living and breathing modern times are the bridges along the Daugava and the space age looking tv tower. Now that is when old and new mash harmoniously.

There’s something to learn from every building. For example, from the mighty Daugava River you can see three steeples dominating the Rīga’s skyline. Built in 1211, the Doma Baznīca is still the biggest cathedral in the Baltic. In 1884 it also had the largest pipe organ in the world. UNESCO recognized Rīga’s new town (which isn’t that new) as showing off some of the finest examples of Art Nouveau. Gargoyles, goblins, and ghouls seem to watch you with expressive faces as you walk by. St. Peter’s Gothic church is as old as Latvia—about 800 years. The Rātslaukums (Town Hall Square) has the colorful House of the Blackheads, which was built in 1344 and just had a fresh makeover. It’s seems like an important building, but it’s just where the Blackheads, a guild of unmarried foreign merchants, hooked up with chicks hundreds of years ago.
