Well this place has changed names more than any 15 aspiring pop stars, actors, or __________ that you can name. Perhaps its being sold left and right is a sign of a well used and good facility or perhaps its just something that is always on the block.

This facility has hosted all types of events. Literally anything from every type of concert, wwf or wwe (or whatever wrestling is called these days), monster trucks, motorcycle races, huge show n shines for Hot August Nights, etc. It literally just never ends.

Pro Tip: This is a one stop shop for most things to do while in Reno.

They have a number of decent and good restaurants, bars, a theater, golf driving range, pool, casino, bungee bounce, etc etc etc. I have been here to eat, watch movies, watch events, shoot car shows, gamble, etc. It is easily accessible and lots of parking. Close to the airport, 395, and I80 its almost dead center in town.

I will definitely be back at this place, hopefully you will check it out sometime as well. definitely it is a place that is well worth checking out if you end up in Reno.

The Grand Sierra Resort is the old MGM Grand Reno. The property was built 40 years ago, but under current management it has been slowly remodelled throughout for the past 2 years and is just about complete. It now bills itself as "Reno's newest Luxury Hotel Casino", so it is now promoting its new look.

The place is massive, not quite on the scale of the mega Las Vegas themed hotels, but for Reno, the "The Biggest Little City in the World" it is large. 27 stories in the tower. And if you are in a hall way, it is about 100 yards long, with the elevators near one end. It was a hike to get to my room near the end. There are 2 separate banks of elevators, 1 - 16 and 17 - 27.

The decor is a mixture of old western, with lifesize action statues of 6 Mustangs horses at the main entrance and just inside a lifesize depiction of the Pony Express mail exchange. The hall lighting in the room sections are faux antique domed crystal lights, and the color scheme is very dark, dominated by dark chocolate browns throughout the halls and rooms. Inside the rooms, there are super comfy beds, firm but well padded, with high thread count sheets and 3 extra long pillows on a King bed. The room size is good, with an 8 foot long modern desk, sitting area, 42 inch HD TV on the wall, and a small LCD TV in the bathroom. The bathroom is tiled with modern design concept fixtures, and the shower (no tub in this one) is large with a 6 inch rain type shower head and all marble tiled enclosure with all glass entry.

The Casino area is large, but seems sparse in slots compared to most Casinos, which are packed with slots. There are many concessions within the complex, with a Starbucks, Port o Subs, Johnny Rockets, Round Table, etc.IT has several fine dining choices, with celebrity chef Michael Palmer heading the steak and seafood kitchens. There are several bars as you would expect, including a hard to find no smoking bar that is actually the largest one in the house.

The complex has its own movie theater, bowling alley, large arcade area for the kids, and just outside is a large man-made lake that is a golf driving range with only islands to shoot for. The pool is large and plays upbeat party beat contemporary music. It has its own show theater, too, and often gets top entertainment, like Michael McDonald, and also on this weekend, the Miss Nevada beauty contest.

If you are used to Las Vegas, this is a bit smaller, but is a decent surrogate for the Reno area, but not quite at the same level. There is a small convention area with meeting rooms and a main ballroom for conferences. The conference area bathrooms have yet to be fully renovated, however. The GSR is the closest to the Reno Airport, but about a mile from downtown and the other hotels.

I got a conference rate of $120 in the summer. I suspect the winter rates for the Ski Bums is higher, or later in the summer when the airshows and other events are happening.

I honestly really enjoyed staying here and I don't know why there has been so many naysayers. I recall the days when this place was pricier and I used to look at its towering buildings from afar a motel somewhere in Reno wondering how nice it was inside.

Of course those days are gone. I think that if I were to come back to Reno, this is probably my first choice to stay in. I've been here quite a few times (thank you recession deals!) and every time it was consistently good. Everything worked, and worked well enough. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable and generally the check in, check out and moving about was painless and what I expected.

What's more, this is probably the only place I would ever order room service again. Oh com'on, don't pretend you like paying $23 for a plate of eggs. Ridiculous, at least they charge reasonable prices here!

Often, we end up checking in super late and it's nice to still have a good room, and sometimes an upgrade to a better room!

For the price, you really can't beat this place for how nice it is.
