Punta Gorda Holidays

This sleepy fishing town in the south of the country is a great place to strap on your fins and take to the reefs. If you’re in the mood for drier activities, you can seek out Mayan ruins in the vicinity or try your hand at drumming with the Garafuna people.

down into what locals might describe as “chilly,” but that the high season tourists from North America and Europe (who hang around from late November through April) will still find pleasant. March through May is a great time to catch good weather and fewer crowds before the rainy season kicks in in June. Those who, like the Wicked Witch of the West, would rather not get wet, should skip the period between August and October, which marks the peak of both the rain and the hurricane season.

Spectacular snorkeling on the reef. We stayed at a hostel right on the water near the endge of town (which is very small). If taking the "ferry" to Puerto Barrios in Guatemala, BE CAREFUL. The weather can change quickly once you leave port. We had a 2 hour long near death experience with 20 foot waves crashing on us and then throwing us into the wind. The little dingy ferrys are not intended for this trip. But the pilot got us through. Lots of environmental expeditions based in Belize and in the area. There are really only 2 roads through the country that are even slightly maintained... until you get into the city. The politicians are extremely corrupt and so are the police. I'll write more later - just trying out this service.
