tan or lose yourself in a good book. Alternatively, find a spot under one of the palm trees that line the beach and let the sound of the ocean soothe you. Playa del Macao is popular with surfers, and there are surfing lessons available for the more adventurous. Enjoy the daily catch and a gorgeous view from the nearby restaurant, or explore the nearby village of El Macao.

Playa Macao, 20km North of Bavaro, is the almost hippie , relatively undeveloped part of Punta Cana. A beatiful beach with local chiringuitos offering fresh fish.

Beautiful beach where you can learn to surf on a sandy bottom (not yours, the ocean!)

It is a wild public beach without any beach beds, rescue stations, limiting ropes in the water etc but with a bunch of cafes. The sand was pretty clean, without much water plants or seashells. The downsides are beach vendors and car tours mentioned by other reviewers. The upsides are that it is a very beautiful natural beach (Bavaro beaches are artificial and made up by comparison), and there is a small lake lurking in the bushes to the right of the beach. We saw few Dominican boys actually swimming and diving in the lake. The lake shores are polluted with garbage, but the water is clean and overall the place is very beautiful. In the ocean nobody was swimming, people only get to jump in the waves, and there were few surfers. There was a wedding photosession on the beach, and I think the beach is a good choice for that. I didn't enter the water at all so I can't comment much on water or seabed. The water seemed of the same degree of cleanliness as other Bavaro beaches, pretty clean. The beach is fairly far away, so it seems you need a car to get there. I'm not sure if any public transport can get you there, we rented a car.

Playa Macao is a beautiful, classic Caribbean beach just north of Punta Cana/Bavaro. It's the best--and closest--surfing spot to Punta Cana with a bunch of fast and hollow waves from both beach and reef-point breaks. Watching the surfers and just chilling out on the beach also is a popular sport--the only downer is that ATV tour groups occasionally come tearing down the beach. (Head north to avoid the traffic.)

The last time I was at Playa Macao, a new resort was in the works--before heading there, ask your concierge if the beach is still open to the public. Taxi or rental car are the easiest ways to get here; it's about a 20-minute drive north of Punta Cana/Bavaro.

Macao Beach is the only public beach in the Dominican Republic's Punta Cana region. It's not far from the area's multitude of all-inclusive resorts, but you'll feels worlds away. Towering palm trees line a few miles of unfettered white sand and lots of locals kicking back and relaxing. There aren't poolside waiters with free pinacoladas, but there are several fresh fruit and food vendors on the beach. And there's even a surf school and shop for anyone interested in hitting the waves. Take a class or just watch the shop's famed 'surfing dog', an amiable young Labrador, from the shore.

An off-the-beaten-path beach that was recommended to us by our Airbnb host in Punta Cana. We rented a car and drove here. The road there was an experience in and of itself, the drivers are pretty crazy and we passed by corrugated tin roof houses and businesses.

The beach itself wasn't crowded at all, and there was a restaurant where they pulled fish directly from the ocean and cooked them on the spot. While there were some tourists there, we got the feeling that this was more of a hidden gem beach than anything else. I know that some of the resort tours bring people here, but we didn't see too many.

Additionally, you can take surf lessons if you're feeling adventurous.

Local from Punta Cana

Excellent secluded beach a bit away from Bavaro beaches. Preferred bu locals on weekends, most of tours ( safaris, buggies, quads, etc.) visit this beach. To the right side is located MSC Surf school, and it is one of the surfers favorite beach. Going there on a Sunday catch some nice waves and have seafood for lunch at local prices to the right side, and then just lay down at this golden sand beach under a tree for shadow and enjoy the great view. You will love it.
