is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five, but it's well worth seeing if you're visiting Providence or going to Brown or RISD.

This was definitely one the highlights in Providence. River, fire, and music, a combination that makes for a unique experience. There were street performers and vendors. It got crowded but there was such a lively vibe that it didn't really bother us.

It was a beautiful experience. Stroll through the banks of Providence River and watch the place lit up by fire. As you walk along the banks, you would see a whole bunch of stalls with food and drinks. Awesome plan for date night.

This is one of the highlights of Rhode Island. It's very relaxing and a fabulous way to spend the night. Would go every weekend if I could.

This is a really great way to get a feel for what Providence is all about. I love the sense of community and joy at Waterfire. This is the kind of event that only Providence could really pull off because of it's size and general feel. The music is goofy, the gondola's are silly, but everyone is doing they're thing and enjoying it which is what makes it so fun.

WaterFire is an annual event along the Woonsocket River. It takes its name from the pots of fire in the river, but there's lots happening along the banks too. It's not just a tourist trap since many of the locals take part.

Water Fire is just amazing. It is a once in a lifetime experience. It is usually every other weekend in the summer. Restaurants sell food on the street, Music and comedians perform on a huge stage. A lot of the Rhode Island School of Design students do street performances including from the past living statues, there is usually a childrens area for kids concerts If I recall correctly. It starts at sunset, when music is pipped through the city speakers along the river. Then volunteers travel around and build up fires on these type of fire pits in the middle of the river. Once it gets dusk the fires are lit, while relaxing music plays. It is a whole city festival type of atmosphere, although there are thousands of people who show up! It is free although donations I believe are appreciated, and of course there are plenty of things to buy should you feel so inclined( food, Souvenirs) There are also river rides you can do. Nothing says festive like riding a gondola with someone special in the dark. It usually continues until midnight or one AM. The entire city comes alive. Trust me if you make it to one of these you will never forget it! I took my Mom and Grams when they came to visit me in college, and they are still talking about it! And that was 7 yrs ago!!! FYI it is usually put on by big companies and when I was there the average cost to produce this, was around $10,000 for one night!!! But I'm sure it is way more than that now!!!!

Romance is in the air, with the fire crackling in the braziers, and the gondola gliding past the dark star lit night. The residents of Rhode Island from far and wide descend upon Providence and stay mesmerised at the water front, allowing the music to transport them to another world. Haunting, folk, classical, many are the words, but in the end they all succeed in making you a poet, unleashing your passion, in giving vent to all that you are. They have different artist performing every week. There was a fire dancer the Saturday I attended

Which is why the crowds shouldn't matter. The ample parking space in the Providence Mall helps. The food courts in the Mall helps too, but make sure to dine before the Water Fire event starts, since they'll all be closed by 10pm (or earlier). Artists are invited to send their work to the Water Fire for consideration, so it is an excellent window to peek into some original, comtemporary artist's work as well. Do visit if you are in town for the summer.

WaterFire is an outdoors art exhibit put on by a non-profit arts organization on various weekends during the summer and fall. About 100 bonfires are lit on the river, and it becomes the basis for a combination party/street festival. Tens of thousands of people attend, and you can find everything from gondola rides to music to living statues to T-shirts for sale.
