Description
The Lennon Wall is a wall in Prague, Czech Republic. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles songs. In 1988, the ... Read more
wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of Gustav Husak. Young Czechs would write grievances on the wall and in a report of the time this led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on the nearby Charles Bridge. The movement these students followed was described ironically as "Lennonism" and Czech authorities described these people variously as alcoholics, mentally deranged, sociopathic, and agents of Western capitalism.

LOVED LOVED LOVED the John Lennon Wall! It made it even better that there was a musician playing while we visited. Great spot for photos and admiring the artwork.

Imagine all the people.... that come to see it! This was such an amazing place. If you love John Lennon than this is a must! John Lennon never made it to Prague but the spirit of his music surely did.

One of the most touristy things in Prague, but for a good reason. It's a beautiful communal art piece that promotes the message of love and peace.

I love street art because it's free, it's usually politically charged, and it's ever-changing. The John Lennon Wall is worth a stop if you're in Prague. Be forewarned that it's a lot smaller than you'd expect and much of it is covered it ugly graffiti and swear words instead of art that's meaningful, but the wall's charming rough-around-the-edges, colorful glory is beautiful in its own right.

Be sure to research the history of the wall, it's pretty rad. And don't forget to flash a peace sign in John's memory, all my fellow pacifists.

Really cool experience. The wall is beautiful and in a cool area. Not too far from Charles Bridge but kind of hidden away.

In my opinion, highly overrated. Covered in people trying to take an original Instagram picture. Cool to see but don't waste your time here!

Do the trendy thing and stop by the John Lennon Wall. Usually an artist or two adding something new to the wall. Can be crowded.

The Lennon Wall is a short stretch, maybe 100 feet of some of the coolest graffiti in Prague. It's close to the Charles Bridge and the walk is lovely through cobblestone streets, so worth taking in.

Local from Prague

IF you are visiting Kampa Park, it's worth it to take a stroll past the Lennon Wall on your way towards Mala Strana. In the 80s young Czechs 'adopted' the wall to air their grievances about the Communist government, as well as to spread Lennon's message of love. The Wall is continuously being 'updated,' countless layers of paint are probably keeping it upright.

This is one huge, colorful, inspirational, artsy wall!! This John Lennon wall consists of many murals and positive quotes that enlighten and inspire the locals and tourists! And many people are constantly adding more quotes and their names on the wall to leave their marks and inspire others! Very beautiful spot!

As a Lennon fan and fellow "dreamer", seeing this wall was my main reason for going to Kampa Island. It's delightfully hidden away from the masses, on a quiet street behind the park, shaded by tall trees. There was a small group gathered when I got there, but the guide jabbered on about the history (in Spanish) and they moved on in a few minutes. I just waited patiently until they did so, and then got some great unobstructed photos of the wall myself. I love the history of it - how Communist guards whitewashed it repeatedly pre-1989 and then finally gave up because the art kept coming back. Now, it stands proudly and boldly decorated with art, graffiti, and messages - my favorite being "Lennon vs. Lenin".

What an experience!
People wrote messages after the fall of the government...freedom of speech. People wrote messages of peace.

You are crossing Charles Bridge to get the Prague Castle anyways - why not take a slight detour and go see the Lennon Wall? Worth it!
