Located in the Jewish Quarter, in a central yet quiet area, the hotel is close to the St. Hastal church. It was originally designed by Czech architectural historian Karel Teige. Clean and modern rooms.

Today, Maximilian is a beautiful, modern, avant-garde hotel, but it started as a Gothic basilica in the mid-14th Century. Karel Teige, a Czech modernist artist, writer and critic and one of the most important avant-garde figures of the 1920s and 1930s, redesigned the building in the 1920s. His style has been maintained over the years, and it was given a modern twist when the hotel opened in 1995. If you can afford a suite or a superior deluxe room, book it, just so you can experience and take advantage of a unique designer glass-walled bathroom in your room. If possible, opt for a bath with a separate bathtub and shower. The bathtub is oversized and beautiful - it feels like something out of 5-star spa. The Maximilian's location is not bad. You're about a 10 minute walk from Prague's main attractions. Staff is friendly and helpful, and they offer a morning run from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Local from Prague

From the moment I arrived, staff were polite and courteous. The public areas at first felt a little sterile – lots of white and bright lights – but rooms were much cosier, with lovely comfy beds, fluffy robes and towels and even the offer of a goldfish to keep you company if you’re missing your pet! This is a designer hotel, but it wasn’t form over function as in some such hotels. Everything had been thought of, and there were plenty of practical touches such as the roomy storage spaces and removable clothes hangers. If you want to sleep in, breakfast is until 12.30 on Sundays! Like its sister hotel Josef, it’s a gay-friendly hotel but also popular with families, business travelers, you name it. The hotel is very well-located, on a quiet street in the Old Town away from the crowds but in easy reach of all the sights.

It’s so calm! The light, bright Maximilian is conveniently located close to both Namesti Republiky and Old Town Square. Smiling faces greet you as you walk through the well-lit lobby and entry way. There’s an honesty bar, meeting space and business corner, and finally a gorgeous breakfast food with an impressive morning spread. Some rooms have a balcony, some have a church view, so make a request when booking. There’s a wellness spa in the basement, which offers special guest-only treats. Just a few doors down is one of the city’s best restaurants, La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise.

Located in a terrific spot on the northern end of Old Town (close to everything, but just far enough away from the thickest of the tourist throngs), Maximilian is a tasteful and very gay-friendly 70-room hotel that serves as the organizational hub during Prague Pride. Like its sister property the Hotel Josef, it was designed by Czech-born but now London-based architect Eva Jiricna, who used a simple color palette to create a contemporary décor that's stylish yet very welcoming.
