People told me about Porvoo, but WOW, it was one of my favorite things I've done in Europe. The people are lovely, the shops carry great local artist goods and the chocolate! The Brunberg Oy store is here with very reasonable prices and free samples!!! Great day trip within an easy 40 minute bus ride of Helsinki.

Porvoo is one of Finland's six mediaeval towns, and in the Old Town, the district dating back to the time of Swedish rule, you can still sense the atmosphere of the mediaeval town. Red shore houses on the riverbank are one of the most photographed scenery in Porvoo. Red ochre paint was used to paint the shore houses in the late 18th century in honour of King Gustav III's arrival. All of the houses along his route were painted, in order to make them look more beautiful. Nowadays there are many galleries, antique shops, cafes, etc. One-day trip from Helsinki is more than enough (50 km from Helsinki). It's a bit overrated town for my taste. Found nothing interesting to do, to be honest.

Porvoo is a lovely town outside of Helsinki where a friend told us we'd get a little bit of a taste of what Finland is like outside of the capital. It was really pretty - lots of beautiful homes built in a traditional style, which is quite unlike a lot of the modern style you see in Helsinki.

The old town of Porvoo is lovely any time of year. There are a few streets with nice antiquarian shops and cafes (do not miss Helmi cafe nor the large red brick building with a cafe near the bridge. Stroll also beyond the bustle to higher hill to see quiet roads with nice wooden houses.
