Pioneer courthouse square is like the typical center of Portland, in the winter it is nice seeing the lights and the big Christmas tree!

Lovingly referred to as "Portland's Living Room" the Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown hosts many events throughout the year like outdoor movies and music festivals.

Located downtown Portland, there is almost always something going on at the Pioneer Courthouse Square, which Portland considers to be their living room. You will find the Saturday Market here, or movies on Friday nights during the summer. The idea wasn't always to have a free public square here, and in fact, the mayor at the time it was done actually supported a local business's idea of making it a closed-in building that would likely need an admission fee--the residents of Portland didn't like that idea, so they raised money through selling bricks with your name on it so that they could build a free public square for all to enjoy. To this day, you can still support the square by buying a brick.

The square was under construction while I was there. There is a little park of it open but you can really get a feel for the actual site.

If you're visiting Portland and don't know what to do I think this area is a good spot to start.

We walked around at night and passed by this area. They had a huge christmas tree and some other Christmas decors.

I love Pioneer Square, you can always find things are are truly Portland here. Street performers, artists, sculptures, you name it is probably there at one point or another. They always have events there as well.

Not much to see here really aside from the hideous red paving. Such a city centre square should be laid to grass and flowers with some impressive statues and perhaps the Courthouse Square was once like that but now it has been paved over from edge to edge which serves only to create a giant puddle when it rains. There is little in the way of good food and shops around it so give it a miss, you'll thank me. Its sole redeeming feature is the adjacent Pioneer Courthouse, a quaint historic building, though even this is best viewed from 5th Avenue rather than the square itself.

Beautiful courthouse to view the gorgeous square, amid the shopping plazas! The courthouse is situated smack dab in the middle of the hustle and bustle of busy shoppers taking advantage of the no-sales tax in Portland! The courthouse looks beautiful at night!

Great spot to sit and people watch in the heart of the city. Easy access from the Max train and lots of great shopping, restaurants, coffee, etc.

Great place to meet people for lunch! Has great options of lunch tables, in and out of the sun. Can get busy, but if it's a nice day, you gotta soak up the rays while you can.

Locals call it Portland's living room, but lately more closed festivals for 21+ older tends to discourage families, food is far away when there is no festival. Shopping is a big thing here. Be sure to support street sellers handmade items.

This is a cool spot for a picnic or just to hang out. There's a lot of history here, and there are descriptors around the square that explain some of it. There's also an echo chamber where you can hear everything in the area if you stand at a certain spot.

The hub of downtown Portland. You can catch the Max here or connect to anywhere downtown. Frequently you'll find musicians and other talented folk here.

From the square you are at the center of the city, the heart of the downtown. Big beautiful open space at the center of where the two sets of Max light rail trains meet. This open space is popular for performances and often at the center of city festivities!

A great place to people watch, and occasionally smell urine on the sidewalk.

With its big flat sunken pavilion surrounded by tiered seating, lots of little walls, and a couple of cafes on the corner, Pioneer Square is just begging for interesting street life, whether it's skate rates showing each other tricks, downtown suits eating lunch outdoors, or full festivals with amplified sound. Pioneer Square is definitely worth seeing, and it's also a great place to meet up (for travelers who want to explore different parts of downtown).

Pioneer Courthouse Square is usually filled with an assortment of activities, whether it's a food market, film showings, and public concerts. Many people purchase food at the nearby food carts and sit along the steps (when the weather is sunny of course).
