The stadium of Philipopolis is a real quirk of history. The city of Plovdiv had grown up and up over the centuries, with many ancient sites being buried under new roads and buildings. It was only during very recent excavations that they discovered this HUGE stadium that extends up and down central Plovdiv. So many shops now lie on top of this ruin that it isn't practical for them to excavate everything, so they've focused on the seating at one end only, giving you an excellent feel for what it would have looked like all those years ago.

Unfortunately there isn’t much that remains of the Roman Stadium that once dominated the centre of town, but it’s still enough to give a fascinating insight into what was. The ancient stadium of Philippopolis was built at the start of the second century and is thought to have been able to seat around 30,000 spectators. As you enter the stadium there is an informative video that you can stand and watch, before heading into the section of the stadium that still remains.
