Wonderful place. Indian ruins everywhere. Drive east on Cave Creek Hwy. and go toward Seven Springs or turn toward Bartlett Lake......great drive, beautiful desert, super hiking and walking. Please be prepared. The Desert is different!

We love going to the Tonto. There is a natural bridge between Payson and Pine that is a must for hikers. It is about 1.5 hours away and is a fabulous day trip! Dogs are allowed in the upper area of the park, but not on the trail to the bottom. Plan to spend at least 2 hours if you hike to the bottom, and take a picnic and plenty of water!

Massive. 3 million acres, almost 6 million visitors per year. Although called a forest, I was in the desert portion and saw nothing I'd call a tree. Hiking trails, RVs, lakes, horses, camping, kids, archery, shooting ranges, cacti. Everything but trees.

During winter months, mild weather attracts residents and tourists to beautiful lakes along multi-hued desert canyons. Seeking refuge from the summer heat, visitors flock to the forest's rivers and lakes as well as to alluring trout streams and the cool shade of tall pines in the Mogollon Rim country (the setting for the Zane Grey classic "Under the Tonto Rim").

So pretty, and even when Phoenix is 75 degrees, this place (only around 2 hours from Phoenix) is suddenly very very cold. We found a frozen lake that was just gorgeous that we weren't expecting to see because it was almost April.
