Description
The 2,608-foot Piestewa Peak dominates Phoenix's skyline, visible from almost anywhere in the city. The mountain was once used for mining and grazing, but the city of Phoenix arranged a long-term ... Read more
lease agreement for it in 1959. It has since become a major rallying point for mountain preservation efforts in Arizona. Gila monsters, horned lizards and chuckwallas can be spotted during a hike up the mountain, as can rattlesnakes, coyotes and kit foxes. Miles of trails take you all over the mountain, providing gems of views of the city and its surrounding panorama.

Great hike right in the middle of the city. I recommend doing it at night (with a headlamp) to get a view of the city lights!

The Freedom Trail is an awesome circumference trail that skirts the base of Piestewa Peak. The trail is moderately difficult and has multiple rocky sections. Trail users may encounter a variety of the native wildlife and an occasional coyote is observed on the trail. The southwestern portion of this loop is shared with the Piestewa Summit Trail. This trail provides spectacular views of the Phoenix metropolitan area. This loop around the entire mountain peak offers great views of Piestewa Peak and other secluded areas near the trailhead. A restroom and drinking fountain are located near the trailhead.

Popular hiking area with great trails for all fitness levels. Beautiful desert scenery and stunning views of the city. Bring plenty of water, and avoid during the daytime of hotter months.

Cool fact: The name changed from "Squaw Peak" to "Piestewa," after the first Native American servicewoman killed in combat. The trail is like an endless series of stone stairs, with switchbacks carved into the cliffs. The trail isn't long, but it's very steep, and even seasoned hikers get a serious workout. (I always plan to a big brunch for afterward).

If you're searching for a tough hike that you can do in about two to three hours, this is it. It's rocky, but mostly paved and well-guided so you'll be able to find your way. The way up is a very difficult cardiovascular workout. You will sweat. You will huff and puff away as you climb to the top. Fortunately, there are different spots along the trail where you can rest up and catch your breath. You'll have to climb up a few rocks to get up there, but you can do it. The views here are great. This is one of the closer mountains to the edge of town. It's hard, but not quite as hard as Camelback.

Great way to see the valley. Access off Glendale from the 51. For those longer hikes you can also use the trailhead south of Shea at 40th Street or from Dreamy Draw Park

It's hard to beat the view. I've been to the top of a lot of peaks, but this baby has some great views. I think that it's so amazing because of the atmosphere. It's so clear, that you feel like you can see forever.

Piestewa Peak has many hiking trails you can take to explore this gorgeous mountain. The Summit Trail is what I usually take for a quick workout to get to the summit of the mountain. This view at the top is breakthtaking. Go there early because the trail gets crowded fast. :)

Piestewa peak is a great hike. Its the second highest mountain in the outlying phoenix mountains. The summit trail hike is popular but be sure to go prepared as there is no water and the 1.2 mile trail is deceptively difficult. The mountain is also named after arizona native Spec. Ann Piestewa, who was part of the doomed 507th maintanence co convoy that was ambushed in march 2003.
