There's a sculpture that stands in the middle of the pool, which looks like an abstract, stretched-out version of Kokopelli. It's beautiful, tasteful, and perfectly placed. That pretty much summarizes this astonishing Marriott resort. The very concept of staying in a "villa" is beyond my comprehension, except maybe for a wedding or a family vacation with 10 children, but if you've got the money to spend and you love occupying an entire pre-furnished condominium, you'll thank yourself for the experience. They tell me that the golf and spa are superb, but even if you just wandered around the resort with a paperback, you'd be happy as a clam. With its synthetic cliff face and clever awnings for shade, the pool area might be the most beautiful place to swim in all of Phoenix. Personally, I don't like feeling so isolated from the city I'm staying in, but for the all-inclusive set, you don't get much better than Canyon Villas.

Wow! The amenities here were truly impressive. A basic suite comes with a king size bed, pull out sofa, a full size fridge and a microwave. I could see this being perfect for the long term traveler or person who prefers to cook their own food. Each room also features its own patio too. I personally loved the on-site gym and three pools too. It's really quiet here, an added bonus if you're looking to relax. A shuttle can take you to a shopping center and the nearby resort, which features a spa. The two golf courses here are also easily accessible. The only downside of this property Is that it's somewhat isolated. You'd have to rent a car if you wanted to go anywhere. But you're getting plenty of amenities and have every reason to stay on property.

Marriott's Canyon Villas are located adjacent to the massive JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in far north Phoenix. This is the kind of place that you have to see to believe. Just imagine sprawling green lawns that slope downward, gorgeous rows of colorful flowers, and more resort amenities than you can shake a stick at. The Marriott Canyon Villas are more private than the regular guestrooms and suites attached to the main building. They are timeshare properties, but I was told you can also reserve them nightly like a regular hotel. The main appeal of these villas are that they are fully furnished, spacious (you can choose between one- and two-bedroom villas), and more private. The villas have access to several private pools (including a kid's pool) and a cafe/pantry grocery. If you want the resort experience, but in a slightly more intimate space than you would get at the main resort next door, the Canyon Villas are built to please.

This place is a full-sized resort. The entrance way looks less like a hotel lobby and more like an airport terminal, with huge windows looking out to the hotel's pools and gardens. And it's huge. The 900+ room resort (all housed within one massive X-shaped building) has hallways big enough to drive a small truck through. But being so big means walking a long way to get to the resort's main attractions, and I was told that guests have been complaining about the trek.

The main outdoor attraction is the hotel's complex of pools. A lazy river, waterslide and multitude of regular pools means there's plenty for the family to do even during the heat of the summer. And when the weather's a bit nicer, you can hit the links on the hotel's two golf courses.

I was told that for an extra $65/day/person, you get access to the hotel's “Griffon Club,” where you can sample from a variety of buffets and grab a drink at the private bar. The price seems a bit steep for what you get, but if you're looking for a private place to grab a bite, it might be something you'd like to look into.
