The original capital of the United States, Philadelphia was laid out by William Penn Jr in 1682, on a grid system that would prove to be the pattern for most American cities. Just a few blocks away from the noise and crowds of downtown, shady cobbled alleys stand lined with red-brick colonial houses, while the peace and quiet of huge Fairmount Park make it easy to forget you're in a major urban area. First time visitors will want to visit the Liberty Bell and Constitution Center for a taste of US history, then head over to the Love Park for an obligatory photo and an afternoon beneath the trees. And of course, no visit to the "City of Brotherly Love" would be complete without a cheesesteak: get one at the tried–and–true Pat's King of Steaks ... Read more
or Geno's, but then explore the lesser-known eateries to find your personal favorite. Foodies looking for something a little more substantial will seek out the Italian Market (don't miss Di Bruno Bros for cheese!) and Reading Terminal Market.
The downside to Philadelphia’s chilly winter (average 41°F/5°C) is that many of the tours and attractions close for the season, and a major strike against summer (average 83°F/28°) is the influx of tourists, many of them school-age. If you have kids, you may be stuck traveling during the high season, which, conveniently, has the best weather for hitting the zoo. Those with some flexibility in vacation time should consider late spring and early fall, when you can experience the beautiful changing seasons, get good low-season hotel rates, and be able to appreciate the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall in relative peace.

This is one of our favorite cities. It has a little or lots of everything that a city should have.

It really is always sunny in Philadelphia. Even in a dreary foggy day, Philadelphia is bright. Philadelphia has a great day time feel as far as getting all of your walking and exploring done. But the night life is very blah. Lots of sports bars filled with testosterone filled football fans who can't handle a little bit of booze. But that's just inner city. Outside the city is a real treat. It almost feels like a nice walk through a small town in a Thomas Kinkade painting (we visited right after the snow storm) I happened to stumble across a really cool antique thrift shop and a HUGE music store which specializes in vinyl. I thoroughly enjoyed Philadelphia. So much that I began to research living expenses within the housing market!!

I had an epic 12 hour trip in this awesome city. Took the bus up from Baltimore which only took two hours and it dropped me off at the bus station on 30th street right next to Drexler University (West Philly). I'm really kicking myself in the leg right now that I never visited here and I grew up in the East Coast. So much more of a manageable city to explore than a New York to eat, stay, and play around - the amount of history here is pretty mind blowing if your into uncovering America's history.

Notable things I enjoyed were the Philly cheese steaks, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Rocky Statue and steps (make sure to run up them), the magic garden, and the ability to Uber Pool everywhere for very cheap :)

Having family from Philadelphia, I have been here quite a bit. The city is awesome because it has something for everybody. The city has plenty of museums and tours to showcase the rich history and they also have plenty of stores for the avid shopper. The city is also a big sports city, as they host the 4 major sports teams (Phillies, Sixers, Flyers, Eagles) as well as many college teams. Speaking of colleges, the area is home to many Universities and places to find a solid secondary education. If you are looking for food, you can head to a nice restaurant in Center City, or you can opt out for a original Philly Cheese Steak at one of the many famous spots. Philadelphia is a friendly, blue-collar, historical, passionate city that is definitely full of Brotherly Love. I have been here plenty of times and I have yet to have a poor experience.

Philadelphia to me is home and I love Center City. Seeing the liberty Bell for the first time made me have happy tears in my eyes along with Independence Hall and Penn's Landing

Dazed & Confused ^_^

Philadelphia is a great city...and people everywhere keep saying it's getting better all the time....It's often called a "city of neighborhoods" because people in Philadelphia identify themselves by what neighborhood they live in....Each one is unique and has something different to offer....Center City (downtown) is lively and has tons of restaurants...bars...shopping... museums...historical sites...theaters..parades...cultural festivals...etc....

A Lot of locals and tour guides said " You will never be bored here no matter what your interests are".... Highlights include ...Independence Hall...the Liberty Bell...Reading Terminal Market...the Philadelphia Museum of Art...and Eastern State Penitentiary....it actually took me less then a day to view all these places... So now what?!? what's next?!?

Public transportation is run by SEPTA....It is affordable and can only get you to certain places ...although it does have room for improvement...good luck and have fun!

Bring a bike lock or buy cheap one so you can use the Indego Bike Share and go inside places. $15 gets you 30 days of unlimited (up to) 1 hour rides. That is long enough to go anywhere in the city or just ride, grab a bite or go to the store and head back.
