While Paris sometimes feels like a caricature of its own romantic perfection, the real Paris doesn't start to come alive until you interact with it in person. Start by smiling back enigmatically at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. Then assess the grand Champs-Élysees and other boulevards from atop the Arc de Triomphe. Wander the orderly streets past flower shops and fresh vegetable stands until you reach the Jardin du Luxembourg, where you can watch families sail model sailboats in the historic fountains. Save Gustav Eiffel's masterpiece, The Eiffel Tower, and the lights of Paris, for the evening. As one of the most hyped cities in the world, Paris both lives up to and surpasses its clichés. Yes, locals spend hours sipping coffee in streetside ... Read more
cafes. No, Parisians do not seem to gain weight, no matter how much delicious French food they eat. Sure, your waiter might scoff if you say 'thank you' instead of 'merci,' but even this is starting to change. Paris is, gasp, modernizing. Gone are the smoke-filled restaurants (à fumée is outlawed in all public buildings) and perhaps soon, the 35-hour work week. But the romance will always stay.

The cliché goes that Paris in springtime (Billie Holiday, anyone?) is the ideal time for a visit, but Parisians will tell a different story. Winters are cold but festive, and autumn sees the Vendange, fashion week and a raft of conferences which can book out many hotels. The weather is probably most welcoming overall, however, between June and September. Consider that July and August are high season in Europe, and along with nice weather bring lots of tourists; a queue to enter the Louvre or other museums is much more likely.

Some risk
Paris is a generally safe city but "the train stations at night are not the greatest location." "Avoid the Barbès- Rochecourt metro stop (in Northern Paris) after 10pm." Note that "Les Halles also has a reputation of being unsafe." A tip for the Metro was to not "sit close to the door on Paris trains -- sometimes people have their bag snatched as the perpetrator gets out just before the door closes." One theme was that after the attacks of the last few years, some are "...worried unnecessarily that things had drastically changed in France due to the media…(but) awareness is always important... to make sure it doesn't translate into…fear." As to dress, "if you look put together in a skirt or slacks, people will treat you better."

Paris, c'est magnifique! The bohemian neighborhoods of Montmartre and the Latin Quarter. The museums, the Champs Elysee, the river Seine, the gardens. What's not to like?

A city that needs no review, Paris is truly a global icon. Yes, there are thousands of cliches and tourist traps here, but the city lends itself to the world and offers it's culture in a way that makes you forget about all others.

An absolute cliche to say it but Paris is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Complaints about the locals are over hyped. Paris is one of the world's great cities. If you can't enjoy yourself here, you should probably stay at home.

When visiting restaurants, keep in mind that the French perspective is that you are stepping into the restaurant as a visitor more so than as a guest. If you set your expectations based on the assumption that the staff view you as someone who has just stepped into their home, you'll have a better perspective on how service should work. Say "hello" and ask for recommendations (they are usually right). The tourist spots can be a painful but a good local French restaurant has impeccable service if you know how to judge it and go with the flow.

Local from Paris, France

There's a lot of positive in this city, if you can work past all the nonsense! Everyone has a different opinion, so come and find your own Paris!

The best view of all of Paris is from the top of the arc de triomphe. While you might think it's from the Eiffel Tower, the view is not complete since you're standing on the most recognizable landmark!

One of my favorite cities. Nightlife doesn't even get started until midnight!

Paris is wonderful! Truthfully, I was a bit spoiled since I went with my cousin who is fluent in French. The locals are much nicer when you can speak the language (makes sense). The fashion and food are decadent, the wine and coffee are cheap, and there are endless macaroons and baguettes. You walk everywhere, so you even lose a few pounds after eating so much. Soak in the history and beautiful architecture on your travels by foot or subway. The only downside is that people smoke anywhere and everywhere, bring a mask if you don't like that!

Ahh the city of love! Paris was very beautiful! So much to see and do! I would highly recommend the Paris pass. The museums in Paris are amazing.. you could spend weeks in the Louvre! D'orssay was my favorite museum. Definitely go to the top of the Eiffel Tower and take a boat ride down the Sein river. Check out Norte Dame cathedral as well, and excellent shopping. Amazing wine and food!

I love this city to bits. Best time of the year to go is August right when all the Parisians are out of town and tourist season is dying down. There were no lines anywhere (even into the Louvre!). Downside is most local bakeries/boulangeries are closed then too.
