The area surrounding Orlando and Walt Disney World is one of the world's great centers of entertainment. You could spend a month here and still not see and do everything. Of course there's the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios, but there's also a zoo, two water parks, several shopping districts, a nightlife island, five golf ... Read more
courses and two dozen themed resorts. And that's just in the Disney family. While the Disney resorts are all in Lake Buena Vista, about 20 miles southwest of Orlando proper, the entire area is filled with family-centered fun. Add to the mix Universal Orlando Resort, Sea World and a host of museums (including the Morse Museum in Winter Park, with the world's most comprehensive collection of Tiffany glass) and it's easy to see why almost 50 million people a year visit Orlando.

When to go

Peak season in Walt Disney World, and, therefore, anywhere in the Orlando area, is anytime that the kiddos have a break from school. If spending most of your day waiting for rides, for restaurants, in traffic, ... Read more
or to take a picture with Goofy is not on your travel itinerary, it’s best to avoid Spring Break (a couple of weeks before and after Easter), summer vacation, Thanksgiving and Christmas. But Orlando is warm year-round, and if you go outside of school vacations, you'll have fewer crowds, off-season prices, and a happier wallet.

Crowded any time of the year, but of course, Disney World is the most magical place for families to visit.

I didn't get to see much of Orlando downtown, as we drove directly to Disney World and hanged out there for half a day. I must go back one day to explore more of Orlando.

Orlando is so much more than just the theme parks that you can find here. There is plenty to do that is free, or things that while not off the beaten path are the types of things that locals go to rather than just the theme parks. It's also a good starting point to places on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts as well.

The San Francisco Bay Area

Personally, I love theme parks, so I like this area. However, if you're not into theme parks, there's definitely better places in Florida that would be more suited to your interests. I love that is regularly inexpensive airfare to Orlando from San Francisco, the weather is fantastic, and it's not far from the gulf for amazing beaches with warm water. There's some good places to eat in Orlando, away from the tourist route. Orlando gets a bad wrap, but if you dig a bit deeper, there's certainly more to be discovered.

Disney is so exciting for young children and adult "kids!" We (8 of us) spent a day here seeing our favorite characters, getting our photo taken at the Disney Castle, and watching the fireworks and parade at Christmas time. Truly memorable (and tiring!)

Our Regal Palms vacation home rental is just 14 miles from Downtown Disney, and 9 miles from Disney Animal Kingdom. Relax and spread out in a 3 Bedroom, 3 bath home, instead of being in 1 or 2 cramped hotel rooms for two to 4 times the money per night! We also saved money on our family Disney vacation with easy to fix sandwiches and meals in our town home's full kitchen, with food we bought. Nearby grocery stores include Publix, Walmart and Target.
