wildlife here is also special: the camelid vicunas can be seen grazing on golden brush; coral-colored flamingos soar overhead and land in broad, shallow brine ponds to suck shrimp out of the mud. Hotels and hostels abound (though reservations well ahead of time are recommended, even in low season), as do restaurants, many of which feature adobe fireplaces, to ward off the cold desert nights. Westward, rough-and-tumble mining town Calama is a good time with some fun, local bars. Northern beach town Arica is off the beaten-path, but is quickly becoming a must-see stop, especially among sun bathers and history buffs. Bustlingly urban Antofagosta is one of Chile's largest cities, but attracts few tourists.
