If you're craving fresh seafood without the fuss, there's no better place to come than Bear Flag on Balboa Island. This relaxed and casual restaurant/fish market serves creative far like poke burritos, assorted ceviches and seaweed salads, plus sushi. Order at the counter, then find a seat inside or out. This place was written up in the NY Times, so you know it has to be darn good.

Was in the area and needed to find a place that was fast and sit down. I've been to the other location in Newport Beach but never ate there so I was pleasantly surprised when I found one on the Balboa peninsula. My hubs was a bit disappointed with the selection he thinks I tricked him into eating seafood and he doesn't really like seafood that much.

He ordered two tacos and I ordered fresh seafood salad. They ran out of certain fish so I ordered Ahi Tuna. The server recommended that they sear the tuna so it would taste better. Needless to say, I don't think I should've taken his advice. Both my hubs and I weren't impressed with our Ahi Tuna in our dish. The texture tasted heavy when it was cooked and it didn't have that chewy fresh taste and no flavor. Was incredibly annoyed by a lady who sat next to me. She kept babbling on how great the place is to her friend and how much she spends. *eye roll*

For now, I rate the place as ok until I come back and try it again. Pricey for the amount of food you get. Parking was easy to find; but the place was packed on Sat night. I think we waited in line for like 15 mins.

Seafood heaven is the best way to describe this place. Everything here, food, decoration, smell all points to seafood. There are a lot of options on how you want your seafood. The best option I found were poke and a burrito. My gf got the burrito with salmon poke, very good! I like the tommy sauce that they have inside the burrito. I got the poke half a pound it was about 10 bucks and it comes with complimentary chips for you to eat it with. The poke was a little oily and watery.

This is definitely one of the best places to get some food. Their octopus salad is really good, their poke is really good, actually everything we got was really really good. Five stars

This guide is supposed to be “beyond tacos,” but not including Bear Flag would be a crime. Their fish tacos are definitely the best in town, but their ahi poke and other fresh seafood is where they truly shine. The place gets a bit crowded so definitely be prepared for a wait if you're planning on sitting down to eat. Otherwise, you can pick up some fish and make your own tacos at home. Be sure to pick up a bottle of their special and spicy Bear Flag sauce, too!

I love Bear Flag and love this new location. There are more seating, full bar, and even a sushi bar!

I love that everything is fresh and delicious! Get the grilled fish tacos! SO good! Also, must get the salmon and ahi poke. It comes with these fresh crunchy chips on the side.

The staff are really nice. They also provide ice and bag for your to-go poke.

Ahi & salmon poke was yummy but the chips that came with it are terrible. Bristol Farms in Corona Del Mar Plaza has better poke!
Mahi Mahi burrito was nothing special, not enough fish, too much tortilla and very bland. I prefer Rubios'!
Very limited seating! Prices are on the expensive side.
However, the seafood here is pretty fresh and the staff are chill.
This place is a bit overrated IMHO.

If you're craving seafood, grab a clam chowder to go from The Crab Cooker, get your poke at Bristol Farms, stop by Rubios for a fish burrito/taco and you'll save yourself some $$$ and your taste buds will thank you =)
Don't forget to visit Bluewater Seafood and Point Loma Seafoods (awesome crab sandwich and lemonade) in San Diego!!!

$2 panko fish tacos here on Taco Tuesday nights! This place has fresh and delicious fish prepared for you while you wait. You can also buy fish to take home to cook up too. Great place for good food but can be a little noisy.

Fresh fish market with lots of options. Delicious. Always a line so be aware and plan for a wait. Salmon poke was awesome.

Ahi Poke! What else is there to say. There is always a line for it and I've gotten extra to-go for each visit I've done.

There are a few things I'd like to note if you're planning on making a pilgrimage to this amazing spot:

1. Expect a line. There are few times that I have been here, especially in the summer, when there hasn't been a line out the door. The staff here does a fairly adequate job of filling orders, but it gets pretty tight back there. You're likely going to be waiting like you're in a restaurant.

2. Notice the fish on the grill: They are cooking your fish fresh here. This takes a few minutes. Stop, breathe, and go try and catch yourself a lobster in the crane game. Or get yourself some UCC Coffee and enjoy the afternoon; your food will be out shortly.

3. Seating can be kind of tight, so don't be afraid to share tables and meet some new people. Or call it in and get it 'to go' to avoid the swarm.

4. This is also a fish market in case you want to DIY. I've gotten some bluefin from here and it was delicious.

5. The teriyaki ono burrito is life changing. The panko encrusted tacos are solid. The ahi poke with El Toro Bravo chips is a strong play. Did I mention the chips are from El Toro Bravo?

So there you have it. Bear Flag is worth the trip, worth the wait, and worth about 4 stars to me.

Went to this place as a recommend from a friend after working out in CDM. This place is awesome, the poke is so good. Fish tacos are legit. Everything is fresh and you can get fish to go and grill it at home. I recommend getting the coconut and after drinking it have them cut it open so you can eat the meat!
