Description
This is one of the most elegant parks in the city of New York. Once the delta of a river, this area was filled in and became home to the gallows and paupers of the city. After some rejuvenation, it ... Read more
became the site of a military compound-- though the cannons kept sinking into the graves which were dug here. After some repurposing, it became the park as we know it today. A hotspot for NYU students (they hold graduation here yearly), tourists, locals, and street performers, this park offers both fun and serenity in a city gone, seemingly, mad. This park is also home to the famous NYC chess tables, where you can find people who will play chess with you (for a fee, occasionally).

I prefer this over Union square any day. It's such an open park with beautiful views. Located near NYU and in the downtown area you'll see people of all kinds with lots of restaurants and bars around. Great place to bring kids, the family, or friends to take a stroll.

Great park surrounded by some really good eating options. The park is close to two University campuses so it has a bit of a student/ hipster vibe. This is also why it is a good area to find budget eating options. I like bringing my European friends her because of the Arch, you could believe you were in Paris if you squint your eyes for a second. In the winter the fountain is emptied out and makes a great place for a photoshoot!

Always busy, even on a winter day- this is a gorgeous park to soak up the energy of the city, relax, meet with friends, enjoy entertainment, and eat delicious food nearby. If you're a Friends fan, this is a must visit :)

There is always something going on in Washington Sq Park. It’s amazing! So much to see from performances to interesting people. I’d definitely recommend this place to some who just wanted to sit back and lounge on park benches.

One of the most popular parks in NYC because it's right next to NYU. Always something interesting happening here.

Nice park when it's sunny except for the occasional rats and bumbs at night. Also avoid the north west corner where a bunch of black dudes are always trying to sell weed. Lots of random protests and street performances during the summer.

I loved Washington Square Park! When we went, there was a pianist from the University that was playing for those that were walking around. The environment was so relaxing and it was such a good time.

Very close to the apartment! Sometimes shows films on Friday night during the summer months. Google films in the park to see where and what is showing!

Washington Square Park is best known for its gorgeous fountain and arch. On any given day it’s full of NYU students, locals, and aspiring chess players. But under the scenic park rest more than 20,000 unknown bodies, from the late 1700s when the entire area was a potter’s field. The area nearby was apparently also used as a cemetery, since a recent water main dig uncovered two large tombs, probably from a nearby church. Just something to remember the next time you’re walking through the park.
