Nice hotel, great location. Love the Art Deco. Great value, comfy beds. Rooms are a bit small but I’m told that’s typical in the city.

This 1929 Art Deco step-back skyscraper hotel is one of my favorite buildings in New York. Walked out of Penn Station, looked up, said "Yep, that's where we're staying." First time I stopped here it was run down and catered to mid-level Asian business travelers. Since Wyndham took over the interior has been renovated to match the splendor of the exterior. Great Midtown West location with an on-site diner (the Tick-Tock), and illustrious history. Goodman and Dorsey bands played here, and many celebrities (from Joan Crawford to Fidel Castro) were guests.

Not the most amazing hotel I stayed in but the location is great (close to Penn station) and the prices are really good. The rooms are pretty old and the place is packed like most of the hotels in the area but it served us well.
Our room had a queen bed, a living room with a sofa bed and a dining area, can be comfortable for a family.

The Wyndham New Yorker has nice clean rooms. I wasn't a fan of the $75 charge they add on if you check in before noon though.

I would definitely recommend the Wyndham New Yorker to first time travelers to New York City (who are neither luxury travelers nor on a particular budget). It has all the elements necessary to a full and proper experience of the city, starting with the fact that the building itself is a famous part of the New York skyline and has hosted many historical figures.
The hotel is also in quite a convenient and desirable location for the first time traveler: near Penn Station and many public transportation options, right in the heart of the city, surrounded by dining, shopping, and nightlife options, and equal distance from several NYC landmarks such as the Empire State Building, as well as Union and Times Squares. Some of the rooms on the higher floors even offer views of the Empire State Building or the Hudson River.
The hotel is newly renovated, so the feel is very sleek and modern, with some 1930's style decorative touches, however sometimes a little impersonal feeling. The Wyndham New Yorker also features fitness and business centers, TV's with free HBO, and all the in-room appliances you could need.

Local from New York City

Home of that iconic namesake red neon sign that illuminates the skyline, this Art Deco hotel has a rich history that goes back to 1930, when it first opened its doors. Now owned by the Wyndham group and renamed the Wyndham New Yorker, the hotel recently underwent extensive renovation. The location is truly excellent, right by Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, making this a very convenient destination and base. The Art Deco design in the lobby is beautiful. The rooms are comfortable and recently refurbished, though small, with a slew of much appreciated modern amenities- free WiFi, flat screen TVs, and coffee makers are just some of the little details much beloved by travelers. Opt for the more upscale rooms on the higher floors for stunning skyline of Hudson River views. There’s also a business and a fitness center on the premises as well as on-site dining options- Tick Tock Diner and Trattoria Bianca.

I've walked past this art deco hotel for years without ever setting foot inside. On a recent work trip to NYC, I stayed here and finally figured out what it's all about. Recently renovated, the beds are super comfortable and the rooms have the same cool art deco feel as the lobby. The location, steps away from the A train at 34th street, is convenient. They have free wifi, which is also very important for me. The major bummer is that there is no room service, no in-room coffee and tea, even, which necessitates getting dressed and going out just for that first cup of delicious hotness in the morning. The closest place is the Tick-Tock Diner, which is overpriced and chaotic. All in all, the prices are reasonable here, the location great, and did I mention the cool view from my 22nd floor room?

Nice hotel, near Penn Station and Madisson Square Garden. Excellent hotel to explore manhattan. It's quite big, so don't expect a personal treatment here.

What I liked about this place is the location and price. The hotel rooms were much too small but hey, it's ny and it's cheap so I'm ok with it. The hotel itself is very large and pretty chaotic. The walk to the broadway area wasn't too bad...maybe 15-20 minutes at a leisure pace. The walk to Macy's was about 7 minutes. Madison Square Gardens was about minutes so location is good.
