It is hard not to like The Pierre. The hotel is a fabulously restored tribute to old New York. The lobby, elevators, and rooms are stunning. I wanted to love this place from the moment I stepped through the front door.

I was upgraded to a City View Suite which was incredibly spacious and decadent -- kitchen facilities, large bathroom with rain shower, spacious living room, large-sized Molton Brown amenities. Based on my experience at check-in and the decor of the property, I was ready to make this my future home away from home in New York.

Unfortunately, the love affair ended when it came to service. Aside from very friendly (and unnecessary) elevator attendants, I found the service at the property to be unacceptably poor.

Big issues:

- Incompetent package / delivery tracking. If you have something delivered to you here, assume it will be left in a storage room and you won't get it unless you fight for it. Two deliveries were misplaced and one delivery was completely missed and had to be returned to sender after check out because the Taj forgot to deliver it while I was there
- Incompetent breakfast service at Le Caprice (apparently they do much better at dinner) -- doesn't open until 7 p.m. (front desk actually thought 7:30), multiple mistakes with order, surly staff. A lot of people doing very little and doing it wrong
- Food and beverage staff that are as cold as the marble floors. Very unfriendly and inflexible
- Over charging for gratuities. Watch your bill on check out.
- Front desk staff that give you a hard sell about making your next reservation with them (if occupancy isn't what they think it should be, perhaps they should address basic service issues first)
- Misleading information on Amex FH&R benefits. I was charged for having my breakfast via in-room dining even though it was supposed to be included (the restaurant wasn't open before 7 -- didn't really have a choice)

One plus on the service side is the security. Surveillance was good and elevators were monitored.

The best thing that could happen to this property is for it to be acquired by Four Seasons or Ritz. I want to love this place but, unfortunately, the Taj has destroyed yet another great US property (see my previous review of the Taj in Boston).

Gorgeous, romantic hotel, perfect for a luxurious getaway. Prime location near Central Park. Ethereal decor and stellar service. The bar areas serve delicious cocktails and noshes. An ideal choice in Manhattan if you hope to venture to the Park during your stay.

Used to LOVE this place about a decade ago. Not so much now...based on opportunity cost alone, if you're in Manhattan you can do so much better for your money -- be your tastes modern or old school, which is why I give it 3-stars. (I.e., were it not for all the choices of places to stay in NY, I could be more generous with my rating.)

An Upper East Side institution which just oozes old money. The place is steeped in Manhattan history: despite a lavish opening and being the talk of the town in 1930, the Great Depression eventually took its toll on the original owner three years later. In 1938 John Paul Getty bought the place and in the 1950s the place was at the cutting edge of technology by being the first Manhattan hotel to install TVs and radios in all guest rooms. Subsequently it's passed through the hands of (now defunct) English hoteliers Turst House Forte, Four Seasons and is currently managed by Indian hotliers the Taj Group. This is where Salvador Dali used to reside when visiting New York and it's not hard to see why: the place has more of the feel of a private members' club than a major hotel. And one lesser known fact about the place: among the long list of special services offered to its well-heeled guests, the Pierre has a special package for those recovering from cosmetic surgery procedures: a car service and escort to and from the surgery, a specially-designed menu aimed at promoting healing, in-room spa treatments and a house doctor on standby 24-hours-a-day. All, naturally, very discrete.

They just did a major remodel of this hotel updating the gym, the reception area, the rooms, the suites, etc. It is right across from Central Park. Note of warning, they have some really small hole in the wall rooms (They also have some gorgeous rooms). If you are paying a lot of money for a room here (which most likely you are) make sure you are not getting the view of the roof tiny room. The beds are really soft & plush though.
