Very welcoming, secure, and clean from the lobby to the bathrooms to the laundry to the outdoor spaces. Only complaint is the elevator can be dodgey.

And the price like that. What not to like?! I mean, other motel, cost at least 60 or over and DO NOT include the bathroom (unless pay 20-35 more to get it!

Full disclosure, I have not stayed here overnight, I attended a conference here. Having said that, huge space, clean, friendly staff, large outside area. Is up north but not far from major subway or bus lines.

What an amazing deal for a hostel. Located two blocks from the Subway station, it's incredibly easy to get anywhere from here. It's proximity to Central Park is also really nice. I did a lot of walking to and from here, and had a fantastic time.

There's not a lot out during the nighttime save for a McDonald's and some convenience stores a few blocks away.

One of the best things about visiting NYC is options, options, options... In regards to lodging, people can choose from luxurious hotels, hotels with basic amenities, apartments/flats, or hostels. Let your imagination and wallet choose what's best for you. If you are looking to spend less on accommodations and more on the city's provocative list of things to do then I recommend Hostelling International. This hostel has a dormitory feeling but enhanced with dining and activities rooms that give lodgers the ability to network with multiple guest and gain more knowledge during their travel. Hostelling International is also great for holding events. I recently attended an event called "Travel + Photography in the Age of Mobile" which was hosted by Gogobot & The Mobile Media Lab. The event was well organized, entertaining, and provided interesting learnings. The presenters and panel members presented excellent examples of their photography that made the viewer feel like they were there when the pictures were taken. The panel members also held interesting discussions about traveling and capturing stories with mobile photography. I look forward to the next event whether it's here or at another great location in Greater New York.

HI-NY is a backpacker's paradise. It's a very social and fun place. You never run out of things to do here. You can chill out in the hostel's many common rooms, which are huge, full of interesting used books from past travelers, and decorated with bright colors and comfy couches. You can watch TV and play video games on the large film projector in the basement. You can play pool in the lounge while you wait for a cocktail from the in-house café. The hostel does a good job of getting guests to interact with each other. There's a welcome party every Monday and Thursday night, and there's always some sort of event going on every day (e.g. walking tour, pub crawl, comedy show, etc). The dorm rooms are spacious but basic—they all contain bunk beds, with mattresses that aren't too soft (but at least they're not rock-hard, right?) and sterile white linens. But as with most hostels, treat your room as a place to crash. At a place like this—and a city like New York—your time is better spent mingling in the hostel's common rooms or exploring the city with your newly made backpacker friends. This is probably the best deal in NYC. It starts as low as $44 a night—and if you sign up for a Hostelling International membership ($28 for one year), you get one free night. Now that's good value.

This hostel feels like a summer camp, in the best way! Travelers congregate on the porch outside to discuss their plans for the days and recommendations for city exploration. Everyone seemed friendly and willing to help out, which is definitely a bonus when travelling. The hostel is really into being a hostel, meaning they are enthusiastic about planning group activities and trying to get guests to go out to local sights and events together, such as pub crawls and various performances. If you want a planned itinerary, HI has it for you! Inside, the hostel is pretty quaint and simple, pretty much what you'd expect from a city hostel. A perk is that it's a short building rather than a high rise, which gives Hostelling International a more communal feel. Rooms are shared, as is typical in this type of budget hostel, but lockers are provided to store personal possessions. You can bring your own lock or buy one at the CVS nearby. This is a great place to stay if you're young and visiting friends up at Columbia, which is only about a mile away.

This is certainly one popular place for backpackers. The lineup to check in is a little bit of a wait but I guess the price is right. There are a lot of common spaces where you can hang out, make food, do your laundry and meet new people so if you're traveling on your own, you're bound to meet a new friend or two. The staff is very diligent about what is going on in the area. They have a large chalkboard wall that lists the events going on that day and they always provide their guests with a sheet of discounted or free activities they can enjoy.

While there may not be a lot of privacy or space between the bunk beds and shared bathrooms, you do get your own locker. Remember to bring a lock, otherwise you'll have to overpay for one. You can also pay for a larger locker if you aren't satisfied with the one you are assigned.

Hotelling International NY is spacious, organized, and well managed. It reminded me of living in a college dorm. The familiarity is rather comforting in a way. It is certainly an excellent and affordable lodging option for travelers.

The location of this place is nice and as with most HI's they have alot of free walking tours and fun social things to do. It's very close to the park and subway station. I've stayed here alone and have never felt unsafe in the neighborhood.

Hostelling International represents a standard of hostels all over the world (not just in New York). I have been staying in HI Hostels for over a decade, and have never been disappointed. The offer affordable accommodation for solo, group, or couples traveling together. Plus, they offer access to a priceless network of backpackers and travelers.

This hostel is a sightseeing stop in itself. It's enormous, with a kitchen, cafe, movie theater, ballroom for events, and art gallery. They also host tons of events, like parties, pub crawls, comedy nights, classes, workshops, and more.
