An absolute treasure built by the TATA family across from the India Gate in Mumbai.

The other renowned landmark on the Apollo Bunder is the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. This 5-star hotel has hosted many distinguished guests from presidents, ministers, royal families to international film stars. The Taj suffered material damage when it was attacked in 2008 by terrorists. It took several months to rebuild the damaged parts of the hotel. Large crowds still visit The Taj and Gateway of India as they are very much intertwined with Mumbai's historical past and present.

Best and oldest hotel in Mumbai. It is known for its architecture, luxury. Foreigners always give preference to this hotel. Still standing proudly since 1903.

WOW. Sitting right on the water front, and next to the Gateway to India, you couldn't ask for a better location for one of the most prestigious hotels in the city. This is five star all the way, and the hotel has a world-famous cocktail bar and restaurant, which non guests are welcome to use (reservations recommended). A day in the Taj Mahal Palace will leave you feeling like royalty.

One the city’s most iconic landmarks. Despite many refurbishments, including a major one after a terrorist attack in 2008, the hotel stands tall and grand as a reminder of the city’s past glory.

Out. Of. This. World. I. Can't rave about this mythical landmark hotel enough. The very definition of class. Every need anticipated and met without prevention. Unbelievable service, food, decor, ambiance, facilities, etc. Complete oasis of civility from a bygone era.

The iconic Taj Mahal Palace has been historically representing Mumbai along with the Gateway of India in the postcard shot. To sing rhapsodies of its long standing history to serve its guests with honor and delight will be equal to describing the obvious and an accepted fact. Yet at the risk of sounding patronizing, I will say that for every leisure luxury traveler to Mumbai and India a journey initiated here is a journey well begun. Steeped in history, the grand dame as we fondly call it has witnessed every moment in India's history including the construction of the welcoming Gateway of India built to receive the monarchy during 1919. Yes, it is 16 years senior to the Gateway and has been a home to statesman, kings, princes and freedom fighters of India. Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten along with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru held meetings here before they gave a speech to bid farewell to the British Raaj. Sarojini Naidu lived here while in the city and has penned some of her poetry in one of the suites. If you are from Britain perhaps you might fancy more than just the history of monarchs that took place here, as Sir John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed at the Rajput Suite for five days. This suite is also a favourite of many Hollywood celebs from Angelina - Brad Pitt to Oprah Winfrey. There is a special signature suite named after Pandit Ravi Shankar as an ode to his fondness for this particular suite where he and George Harrison held there jamming sessions with the sitar. The famous sitar is displayed in the living room of the duplex suite. The Taj Mahal Palace has been iconic for its gourmet traditions with Shamiana and The Golden Dragon restaurant crossing over 42 years and 25 years respectively and still loved by the patrons with much enthusiasm. Masala Kraft is another great restaurant that is known for its authenticity of Indian cuisine. The tower wing of Taj is best suited for the speedy affairs of the business class jet setting around the country and the continents closing deals. The most notable and a must do while staying or visiting the hotel is to partake in its heritage tour everyday at 5.30 pm where the heritage concierge will immerse you into a cauldron of tales spanning over 112 years.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel right near the Gateway to India. This hotel has hosted guests from John Lennon to Winston Churchill. The service here was amazing as was the food. The rooms are comfortable and very well appointed, with big soft towels and great beds. Would definitely come back!

Certainly Bombay's most famous hotel, and certainly one of its very best, this heritage landmark right beside the Gateway of India on the Colaba waterfront is THE place to experience top-notch comfort, character and service in a wonderfully historic building. Predictably expensive, it's played host to heads of state, actors and musicians for generations.

Lot has been said about the architecture, location, service, heritage about this hotel. So not gonna bore you further but share my experience in their not-so-oft written about Lounge & even more exclusive Spa.

Nothing is quite as regal and nostalgic as a lazy mid-afternoon or even a high tea at the Sea Lounge http://goo.gl/dcrkt. This place is steeped in history, offers an exquisite view over the Gateway of India & indeed has the most delectable finger-food, petit fours, etc.

Get a table by the panoramic window. Do ask for the mushroom vol-en-vents (they don't feature on the menu anymore - but they indulge their old patrons). Enjoy the piano music. Watch out for that tempting dessert cart as it makes the rounds. And to capture your moment - a photographer is always making the rounds ready to capture your memory!

I have experienced and enjoyed the exclusive and sophisticated experiences the Taj in-house restaurants unfolds for their pampered guests. Highly recommended. Take a pick: http://goo.gl/Q8Hcn

Should you be visiting around Diwali (like a Hindu Christmas! ) - look for their surprise knick-knacks. Ask for their exclusive gift hampers and don't forget their inhouse signature wines!

Spa: Jiva - any Taj property which houses their signature spa line "Jiva" just reserve yourself for the pampering. Private, quite, fragrant environment. Treatment rooms placed at a distance, soft rustling sounds and barely any conversations or imposed music. Truly an oasis in an otherwise noisy and chaotic city. Must try experience. Go in for their light cleansing massage for activating the lymphatic system. Watch your skin glow for days later and how energized you feel. It is a 2 hour pampering. When in Chennai I had tried their couple Massage - but I don't know if the Mumbai hotel's 6 treatment rooms houses this special. They do have a gym & beauty salon as part of the spa.

And should you be headed to India in the hot summer months - look forward to be rewarded by the limited-time-only MANGO menu! mango menu in INdia is like nothing you've seen elsewhere, It is considered a "royal" fruit - "king of kings" blah blah. Just have a blast.

Arguably the best hotel in the world. We stayed in the Tower where the rooms are not as nice as the palace (the rooms are good but not amazing), but the real stand out at this hotel is the service. The staff was absolutely phenomenal taking care of every whim and need and always with a kind smile. The breakfast is also one of the best buffet breakfasts I've ever had!

I usually loathe hotels that are way too fancy, but I came here for high tea because it was raining since I was in India during monsoon season. I loved it, the place is beautiful and the service is great. There was even an interview with an actor at the table next to us. And the food was ridiculously fun to eat - delicately flavored chai, small appetizers (samosas, idli), cute pastries, and adorable tea sandwiches.

This is the grand dame of Mumbai and is worth a visit even if you don't stay here. The hotel consists of a modern "tower" and an older "palace" section. The "palace" section lives up to its name -- opulent furnishings, lots of dark wood, and nice views of the harbor and Gate of India.

A stay here is an experience and worth it even if you only spend one night. It is a great refuge from the chaos of the city and way to get up close and personal with a historical landmark.

The service is impeccable. The hotel has full facilities, including a nice pool area. It is very easy to explore the local neighborhood on foot.

Note: I stayed here prior to the terrorist attack. My understanding is that the hotel has been refurbished and is back in working order. It is definitely worth checking in advance.

This is the obvious choice for best hotel in Mumbai. Exceptionally expensive, but the Taj is one of the grand old Asian hotels, a landmark in Indian tourism and a legitimate destination in its own right.

The location is ideal. Prosperity tends to stick to the suburbs in Mumbai, and most of the quality hotels are nowhere near the tourist spots. But the Taj's back door opens onto the Gateway of India and the boats to Elephanta, and it is thronged by tourists, beggars and touts. It is not just among the attractions: it is the attraction.

One stop shopping for gorgeous colonial architecture, world class service and the bustling insanity of Bombay.
