This is the most important plaza in Montevideo and separates the main sections of the city. Great reference point for walking around. Sit down and enjoy the different architecture.

Plaza Independencia is the most important square of Montevideo. It marks the limit between the Ciudad Vieja (old city) with the Gateway of the Citadel, and the modern city (downtown). The Artigas Mausoleum, dedicated to Uruguay national hero, is right at the centre. It is surrounded by many important buildings. Unmissable in Montevideo.

Very cool to see. The monuments and buildings perfectly compliment the huge open space.

Plaza Independencia is located between the downtown and Ciudad Vieja. The Presidential Palaces and some other government buildings are located here.

Plaza Independencia is the main square in Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's old city. It is a large and nondescript plaza in a frankly large and nondescript city. Montevideo has its charms - the people are friendly and the food is spectacular - but it's fair to say it is not a postcard picturesque city, it is not very attractive in that sense. A statue of General José Gervasio Artigas, the father of Uruguayan nationhood, lies in the center of the square.
