Why Go

Minneapolis is truly a watery city, with over 20 lakes, most of which surrounded by trails and parks, within its borders. The presence of St. Anthony’s Falls, besides being, yes, more water, was the inspiration for founding a city to harness its water power potential, and helped make Minneapolis the flour milling capital of the United States in the late 19th Century. With St. Paul, it makes up one half of the Twin Cities, and is arguably the cooler sibling, being packed with art and culture (it is called the “Mini-Apple.") Snow doesn’t shut down Minneapolis or the professional athletes, punks, university students and yuppies all co-existing peacefully and, more likely than not, cycling past each other on one of Minneapolis’ over 120 miles ... Perhaps winter isn't the time to visit. Friendly people but, with only a couple of exceptions, visually boring. The city can't seem to decide if the want to emphasize their history or Theo modernity. They have ended up with a hodgepodge that reflects neither.

Minneapolis has an amazing foodie scene, tons of theaters, and a load of outdoor adventures within an hour drive of downtown. One of my favorite towns in the US

For a northern city, Minneapolis is quite a city. It has a lot to do--from it's museums and shops and restaurants to its parks and recreation, and so much in between. Granted, there is probably little that you can find here that you can't also find in other large cities, so I don't know if I would travel to Minneapolis from other large metro areas, but if you're not from a large metro already, Minneapolis is a great place to come to see a lot in a short amount of time. Plus, you're close to other things in the Twin Cities such as Stillwater and Mall of America, plus Duluth and Rochester.

Minneapolis is a premier Midwestern town. It has a rich, eclectic downtown skyline and plenty of fun people who inhabit it.

The parks in this city are simply the tops- the uptown lakes especially cannot be beaten.

The foodie scene is a vibrant one, as well as the nightlife options.

It's a gorgeous city and well worth a visit.

These Minnesotans ranked as the smartest, and some of the friendliest, people in the nation. They’re also happy to share their local coffees. Stalwart Caribou Coffee, for instance, now counts hundreds of U.S. locations. A few new places have carved out their own niche in the Twin Cities: the organic Spyhouse Coffee Roasting Co., whose three cafés are furnished with midcentury pieces, and Peace Coffee, affiliated with one of the earliest fair-trade coffee groups, which teaches coffee-making classes.

The area also ranked highly for it's autumn attractions. While plenty of locals happily pedal around town during the depths of winter, for most people, fall is the last hurrah for bicycling and jogging around the lakes. One high point is September’s Minneapolis Bike Tour, which offers routes of varying lengths around the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway; another is October’s Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, which has been called the prettiest urban marathon, thanks to its tree-canopied route along parkways, lakes, and the Mississippi River. To prove that you’re as hearty as the locals, go watch the Minnesota Vikings play outdoors for the next two seasons, while their new stadium is being built.

Hunt & Gather is a treasure hunter's Mecca. An eclectic mix of just about everything, if it can be repurposed you can find it here. A definite MUST visit!

Minneapolis is a cosmopolitan center for art and culture. The vast network of bike paths helps keep commuters going when on snowy days. Big city amenities, small city beauty.

Minneapolis and her sister city St. Paul are great for family vacations. With several museums designed specifically for kids and families (Minnesota Children's Museum, Science Museum of Minnesota, The Works) there is always something to be learned when the weather doesn't cooperate.

The park system is amazing and well worth exploring. Regional parks have family friendly events that are often free. If your family enjoys the great outdoors you can rent bikes, canoes, go camping, swimming, fishing or geocaching all within the greater metropolitan area.
