Al's is a little diner that serves a very diverse clientele. When I say little, I mean 14 seats in the whole place. There's just enough space for coats, a line of people waiting and the stools for the ... Read more

Must-go...really different atmosphere in UofM (probably the smallest restaurant...so get there early!)

Great breakfast food. Great vibe. Waiters are great. Cash only. Wait can be long. And you might not be in the same seat your whole meal.

This place is an institution. It's a place you should visit. It's been around forever (and really hasn't changed). Maybe you've seen it on TV? I can't see myself becoming a regular though. The tiny little breakfast bar is always full and the wait is always out the door. The food is quite tasty, but doesn't quite make up for the ridiculous amount of time you'll spend in line. A fun place to try, but not an every week kind of joint.

TINY, shoebox of a place but sooooo worth the wait. Old school diner style restaurant with counter seating. You literally stand bohemia people to wait for them to get done eating. Great hangover food!

Another Triple D Diner's, Drive Ins & Dives favorite. It's tiny and breakfast only so be prepared to wait. It's worth it!

There is always a wait no matter how hot or cold it is but it is always worth it. Blueberry pancakes are always a must.

Al's is a Minneapolis institution. It is the smallest restaurant in the city. You need to prepare yourself for this one-of-a-kind experience. Al's is only open till 1:00 pm. Most days you will have to wait in a line to sit in one of 14 stools at the counter. Gradually edging in, you will be told when and where you can sit. If you can make it through the waiting, the cramped quarters, and the employees shouting, you will be rewarded with what is probably the best breakfast you will ever have. Pretty much anything you order will be delicious.

Al's is my one must-visit stop every time that I'm in Minnesota. Their pancakes are superb (Gourmet had the recipe in one issue), and the omelets are wonderful. It's a bit tough to get one of the 14 seats, and having a few people looking over your shoulder while you eat isn't necessarily the best dining experience, but I still can't get enough of the place.
