Ship: Norwegian Jade
Trip: Rome-Toulon-Barcelona-Monaco route
Food: Excellent. Steak, Lobster and Paella. Wonderful.
Entertainment: A show every night. It was excellent.

Problems: Not much, just a tiny gym and had trouble on the day we leave the ship. Everyone had to wait for more than an hour cramped in the exit areas. It was pretty bad. Other than that, this was a nice ship

I took my first Cruise last September on the Norwegian Jade. I had a great time, and since I don't a basis of comparison regarding other cruises and ships, I'll call this a 4+ Star experience. Gayle has that context, as do Erin and Jim (Gayle's Sister and Brother-In-Law) who joined us. Here's my breakdown:

THE SHIP

The Norwegian Jade was originally built as the Pride of Hawaii for NCL's America division. She was built in Germany and christened in Los Angeles in 2006. This Ship maintains much of her original Hawaiian themed decor, including tropical flowers, Hawaiian landscapes, and Hawaiian names throughout the ship's public spaces.

WHERE DID WE GO?

This was a 7 Day Cruise that started in Venice and included 2 "At Sea" Days, plus visits to Dubrovnik (Croatia), Athens, Izmir (Turkey), and Split (Croatia), before returning to Venice. Croatia was amazing and Athens was its sprawling ugly self.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We made our reservation a year ahead of time and booked a mini-stateroom at the back of the Ship that included a nice sitting area and deck. The bed was comfortable, the showers were hot and strong, and the closet and drawer space were ample.

DINING

NCL offers freestyle dining, which means that you eat what you wish, when you want, and with open seating. The Common dining areas included both buffet, sit down (Grand Pacific and Alizar), and even a 24-hour joint (Blue Lagoon). The food was "OK" in terms of variety and taste. We also paid extra for a "few" dinners in the specialty restaurants. The best choice was their French Restaurant (Le Bistro), followed closely behind by Cagney's (Steak). The Italian choice (whose name changed mid-cruise) was just OK and not worth the premium.

PUBLIC ROOMS

The Atrium was cheerful with live music each night. Other public areas were equally welcoming. We also checked out the Casino and were a few volunteers short of a pub crawl from one of the Ship's bars.

ENTERTAINMENT

We went to the "Big Show" the first night and found it to be a bit schmaltzy. The smaller lounge acts (like the guy doing a an acoustical version of "Sultans of Swing") were better. We also dressed up one evening for "White Night" and had a wonderful time. Maybe Gayle and I also should have attended some of the big shows every evening, but we were just happy to hang out in smaller venues.

FELLOW TRAVELERS

Ship employees and fellow travelers were from all over the world and representing a wide variety of ages. Most of us pretty much kept to ourselves.

EXERCISE

The Ship has a decent Exercise Room. Gayle and I also walked around the ship (available on 2 levels) several times for our daily exercise. I also tried a dip in the pool, but the elevated chlorine levels were hard on my eyes and decided to not to go back. Most folks were lying out in the sun anyway.

EMBARKATION/DISEMBARKATION

- The process of getting on and off the ship was very efficient, regardless of whether the Ship was docked or we were taking tender boats into port.

- However, the Bus Bridge from the Port to Dubrovnik was slow, hot, and long.

SERVICE

The Cabin Stewards were friendly and efficient. The staff in the dining and common areas, as well as the entertainment crew were always friendly and accommodating. The ship was clean, well kept, and maintained.

SHOPPING

- There was a bunch of stuff for sale, most of which looked at once and moved on.

- The Park West Gallery offered art sales, but most of that was beyond my pay grade.

EXTRAS

- Wi-Fi was relatively expensive and slow. We bought a minimum plan to stay in touch and used our minutes wisely.

- Alcohol of course is extra. Prices are relatively reasonable, but things can add up among lots of leisure time and good times together.

- Ship Photographers seemed to be always taking pictures to capture various moments. They are all posted in the common area and add up cost wise.

- The Ship offers currency exchange, but land-based rates are better.

- Tips and Gratuities. Room gratuities were covered in our rate. Tips for drinks and other purchases were added automatically.

REGRETS

- I should have signed up for the tour of the Ship's Bridge and other operating areas.

- Not bringing my swimming suit on the shore excursion to Dubrovnik and going swimming in the clear blue Adriatic.

- The shore excursions also got me thinking about how much more of Croatia and Turkey that I would like to experience.

- Not buying that Turkish Rug after the hard sell demonstration.

We sailed NSL on 7 days cruise around Hawaii. We addicted to cruises, but this one was the worse one related to time on board: no proper housekeeping (had to call for towels), waiters forgot or mixed your order serving table for six.....Twice in seven days we dined in speciality restaurant paying extra. Likely itenerary was perfect and that the only reason that could turn me to NSL ever again.

While my favorite cruise of all time was the Princess Cruises trip my family and I took to the Mediterranean, NCL had a far superior ship. The shows on board were actually entertaining and the design of the ship made it really easy to get around (this is a huge benefit for days when you're just wandering about).

If you're thinking of taking a trip up to Alaska, I highly recommend NCL. Their staff and service are amazingly professional. Everything sparkled with the sheen of newness. I had a remarkable time exploring the glaciers thanks to the crew.
