                        Mexico City Hotel Insider
As the oldest capital in the Americas (originally built in 1325 by the Aztecs), and the third largest urban metropolis in the world, Mexico City has some serious history behind its big-city fame. Despite a haunted past of pollution, drugs, and crime, the city has since cleaned up its act and is more known for its food, art, culture these days. The city is built on the ancient dried-up bed of Lake Texcoco at some 7,000 feet above sea level, and is surrounded by tall mountains and volcanoes like the Ajusco, the Popocatepetl and the Ixtaccihuatl, as well as the ancient treasured sight of Teotihuacán. With several hundred hotels in 16 burroughs similar to those of NYC, Mexico City has something for everyone - at every price level.

                        Mexico City Hotels
Hotels in Mexico City run the gamut from dirt-cheap backpacker hostels (think $10 a night) to lavish resorts. On the whole, however, hotels here run slightly below average prices, providing good quality service for affordable rates. Hotel Isabel is one such example: a beautiful old-fashioned building in the heart of the historic district, it features both private and shared bathrooms, comfortable beds, and a cantina in the lobby. Camino Real is an architectural wonder, built for the 1968 Olympics, and features fine art, standard rooms, and an impressive buffet breakfast for a decent mid-range budget.

Mexico City is not without luxury, though. Brands like the Westin, Four Seasons, and the Hyatt Regency are highly rated, especially at more affordable rates than their North American or European sister locales. All of these reputable chains are located in the heart of the city, convenient to many attractions like the Bosque de Chapultepec and Polanco district.

                        Things To Do
With all the things to do in Mexico City, you could wander the city for days and never stop learning something new. Check out El Zócalo, the third largest square in the world, home to royal proclamations, ceremonies, and protests, and rooted in history back to the time of the Aztecs, who used it as a gathering place. The Mexican flag is ceremoniously raised and lowered here every day, while the National Palace and cathedral border the square. The grandiose Catedral Metropolitana rises above the city in 500-year-old architectural splendor, Museums like Museo Nacional de Antropología and Museo Frida Kahlo offer a glimpse into the art, expressionism, and anthropology of the ancient culture. The magnificent Palacio de Bellas Artes is a cultural center where you can attend poetry readings, operas, dance recitals, and browse art by Rufino Tamayo and Diego Rivera. Nearby, Castillo de Chapultepec, once the seat of Aztec government, is a must-see on top of Chapultepec Hill. Just outside the city, Xochimilco is an ancient transportation hub filled with canals and artificial islands. Or, day trip to Teotihuacán, a 2,300-year-old city with some of the world's largest pyramids (including Pyramid of the Sun), and Puebla, a colonial era town known for its old buildings and world-famous cuisine.
