A 'luxury boutique hotel' in the heart of Mexico City, the Marquis is that perfect blend of modernity and vintage charm within striking distance of the best D.F. has to offer: the Zocalo, the Modern Art Museum, the Fine Arts Palace, the National Auditorium and the Templo Mayor.

The Marquis Reforma hotel greets guests with an impressive water-sculpture lobby opening into a bar and a chic Japanese restaurant called Nicksan. The style is a bit unclear – it appears to be art deco mixed with some Asian fusion – but the hotel is definitely stylish. All of the rooms have a desk, safe, umbrella and mini bar, and standard rooms include either a king bed or two doubles. We also saw a swanky suite with both a convertible couch and a bedroom, with a sliding door that partially separates the two. Amenities include 24-hour room service, a hair salon, a nail salon, a large gym, a pool – which was closed for maintenance when we arrived – and an impressive spa, which offers massages, facials and body treatments in separate male and female sections, each equipped with two hot tubs, a sauna and a steam room.

The Marquis Reforma has the unenviable task of competing with upscale hotels like the St. Regis and the Four Seasons, both located nearby along Paseo de la Reforma. The Marquis is a nice hotel, with the largest hotel gym I've ever seen and a beautiful spa. But its prices are probably a little too high for what it is. The rooms are attractive and well-decorated in the same quasi-Art Deco theme visible throughout the building. All the standard amenities are present -- mini bar, safe, room service, even an umbrella -- and the hotel has several restaurants and bars. The pool looked attractive, but it was closed for repairs when we were there. Overall, the Marquis would be a better option if it cost a little less, and better deals are available at smaller hotels a few blocks off Reforma.
