A 1960s architectural masterpiece. A little off its heyday now but still a smart place to stay in DF. Rooms are really spacious, though a little dated. Very handy location for the Anthropology Museum nearby.

This is a large upscale hotel in the financial center of the city. The building itself is fairly nondescript but the lobby is huge. The rooms are a little tired but the staff is friendly and helpful.

The stunningly modern Camino Real was built by architect Ricardo Legorreta for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. It includes many examples of fine art -- such as a Rufino Tamayo mural in the lobby, as well as pieces by Mathias Goertiz and Pedro Friedeberg -- and iconic bright pink, yellow and blue decor. On the edge of the Anzures neighborhood, the hotel borders the beautiful Bosque de Chapultapec, the posh Polanco neighborhood and many museums. It’s a gigantic hotel, with 712 rooms on only five floors and seven restaurants, including Morimoto Mexico City, one of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s restaurants. If you’re looking for a deal, book a weekend stay, when standard rooms drop to $125 per night. If you can afford it, it’s worth springing for a suite. Ask for a garden view for a quieter stay and a view of the pool. Guests staying in suites and club-floor rooms also get access to the executive lounge, which includes free WiFi, breakfast, happy hour and nonalcoholic drinks all day.

The sprawling Camino Real does a nice job of providing affordability, amenities, location and decor. With more than 700 rooms, it would be easy for this place to overwhelm, but it somehow manages to feel more intimate than you'd expect. If you're in town for business and don't have time to explore the city, you might appreciate the Camino Real's seven restaurant, including one owned by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, who apparently visits about once a month. It also has one of the coolest-looking hotel bars I've ever seen, the azure-tinted Blue Lounge. The location -- right on the edge of the Bosque de Chapultepec and the posh Polanco district -- is great, and roomy suites are surprisingly cheap, especially on weekends. Standard rooms also are relatively cheap, but disappointingly boring. Guests in suites and on the club level have access to a lounge that serves breakfast and has free internet.

A bit faded these days but stunning architecturally and the best breakfast buffet I have ever had - you can eat your way around Mexico (and enough for a whole holiday) before leaving the hotel!
