Mexico & Central America

Hands-on is a good way to describe Mexico and Central America. People who enjoy participating in the culture, exploring adventures and learning the ways of the land are often big fans of this region. With coasts along the Caribbean and the Pacific, visitors to Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala often enjoy both oceans in one trip. The ... Read more
secret is out in much of this region, and many visitors have discovered countless delights -- cloud forests and surfing in Costa Rica, Spanish language schools and Mayan villages in Guatemala, diving and a mix of Garifuna and Mayan culture in Belize, dive sites in Honduras, colonial cities and beach resorts in Mexico. But there are also the unsung spoils of the natural world here -- the volcanoes and Mayan ruins of Nicaragua, the Bocas del Toro Caribbean archipelago of Panama, and the relative isolation of El Salvador.

mid-October) and dry (mid-October to April). Venturing to this region during the wet season isn’t impossible (and means fewer tourists and lower prices) but you could face not fun things like more mosquitos, impassable roads, heavy rain and possible hurricanes. Christmas and Easter are also popular times to visit so be sure to book ahead and expect higher hotel prices. However, if you do have the opportunity to travel here during Semana Santa (Easter week), you should take it: you’ll get to experience Latin America at its wildest.
