Hobbiton was #1 on my list of things to see when we went to New Zealand, and it did not disappoint! You check in at the visitor center/gift shop and then board a bus that will take you to the set. The guides are well informed and tell great stories about the making of the movies and where different scenes were filmed. If you didn't have a guide, you would just be walking around and looking at the facades and all of the gardens, so be grateful for your guide. They have one hobbit hole that you can go into, which is a great photo op for you. We feasted beforehand in the dining hall and the food was good, but not really amazing. At the end of the tour they give you cider or beer at the Green Dragon Tavern which really tops it off. Yes, the tour is expensive and the souvenirs even more so, but it is a definite "must-do" if you are nearby in Rotorua.

Definitely one of the most beautiful days in memory. The drive to the site was gorgeous - green fields, tons of sheep, and cloud-studded skies. The set is soooo well maintained and the tour is very informative. I would definitely return again!

It's the place where the Lord of the ring and the hobbit captured. Fabulous.

If you're a super fan of LOTR or the Hobbit, this tour is for you. However, if you're impartial or on a budget, you may want to consider passing on this one. Don't get me wrong, it's really neat to see the Shire but it's about $80 for a three hour tour where you get to walk around and take photos in front of the hobbit holes. It's also a touristy spot so expect crowds.

Great 1 hour tour! They give you history and time to take pictures. Gift shop gets crowded as the day goes on so try to get it in before you go on the tour. The air and the set is so refreshing. Free drink at the end of the tour. Anna, our guide, was great!

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”

Ultra expensive ($75 NZ each) but a must for LOTR fans. Tour is good and set is well done. The out buildings are nice but just shells (nothing inside) but you do feel like you are in the Shire. The Inn is inviting but for that price they should have live music. You get a free beer and the food is cheap by NZ standards, The gift shop is lacking Hobbit stuff because of license issues.

A must go for LOTR fans! The setting is beautiful - bagshot row and all the brightly colored hobbit holes; the lake, party tree, water mill and lush gardens all over. The ales provided at the Green Dragon is a great way to end the tour.

besides being able to actually see and be in the movie set, it's a very informative tour as the guide is able to provide some interesting information on the movie set. a beautiful place and i guess it's a must visit place for fans of the lord of the ring.

The drive here is fairly long - 2 hours or so from Auckland by auto. You pay 75 NZD for entrance and that gets you a 1.5 hour tour plus a complimentary drink at the pub at the end. It's a pretty cool little place to come, and amazing to note that this is where the movie came out of. Don't miss this if you are a LOTR fan.

Hobbiton has the set from her Lord of the Rings movies, but you also have a chance to feed baby lambs. The cafe is decent and the only food close by. They were working on a restaurant in the Green Dragon while we were there in November 2012.
