A famous church on top of a high hill overlooking the entire city of Marseille and its surrounding country. There used to be a church since beginning of Christianity, but the current church is a bit more recent. Absolutely wonderful view from here. The gilded statue on top of the tower can be seen from very fare away. The crypt under the church is nothing special. The inside of the church is very colorful. There is a lot of marble and mosaics.

This is THE symbol of Marseille (perhaps along with the Stade Velodrome) and the best part is that it's free! Hike the long walk up to this beautiful Cathedral and admire the 360 degree views that stretch all the way out to sea and all the way back to the mountains. Stunning.

This huge cathedral is located on one of the highest points overlooking the city and harbor, which makes for a steep hike to reach it but the best views from the top. The church itself is beautiful and very unique, with model boats hanging in the sanctuary, but its WWII history adds another layer to a visit.

This basilica is located high above Marseilles but is well worth the rather grueling climb to reach it. The church itself is very beautiful but the views from it are even better.

Holly place with an amazing view on the city. A must see. Take a bus from port ( in about 3 euro round trip) or a small tourist train from port for in about 8 euro one way.

The Notre Dame Basilique is also known as the Good Mother Church since the purpose of the church was to bless sailors and seamen coming and going from Marseille. It sits atop a hill and is great for hiking and viewing the city as the sun sets.

Notre Dame de Garde is one of the most visible landmarks in Marseille, with its black and white stone and golden statue on top of the bell tower. It's a tough climb on foot, which is how I got there. I was also getting over a cold, which made it tougher. From the top, however, the view is incredible. You can see the Old Port and the islands out in the Mediterranean.

Something like time stopped, and all you have to do, is regain life. A moment of resurrection of the spirit. After breathing the air in the Basilique, feels like having wings to fly !

Everywhere you go in Marseille, you'll see the golden statue of the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, the Romano-Byzantine basilica rising up from the city's highest hill, La Garde (530ft/162m). Built between 1853 and 1864, the domed basilica is ornamented with colored marble, murals, and intricate mosaics, which were superbly restored in 2006 after suffering damage from the atmosphere, candle smoke and war. Bullet marks and vivid shrapnel scars on the cathedral's northern façade mark the fierce fighting that took place during Marseille's Battle of Liberation in August 1944.

Its bell tower is crowned by a 30 ft (9.7m) tall gilded statue of the Virgin Mary on a 40 ft (12m) high pedestal. Locals see her as the guardian of their city and call her 'la bonne mere' or the good mother. Each year on August 15th, there is a popular Assumption Day pilgrimage to the church. From the dome you get a 360-degree panorama of the city's sea of terracotta rooves below.
