of years ago. Stroll around the student dwelling courtyard and take in the complexity of the patterned murals or the beauty of the looking glass pond. The student dwellings themselves give a valuable insight into what life was like for those living and studying in the region in 1400s and 1500s. The former college is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

In the heart of the medina, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, one of the largest madrassas of the Maghreb, is one of the most remarkable historical monuments of Marrakech and undoubtedly deserves your visit. It was in the 16th century that it was erected by the Saadian Abd Allah Al Ghalib, information attested by inscriptions on the lintel of the entrance door and on the capitals of the prayer room. Designed on a quadrilateral plan of 1680 m2, the madrassah had 130 student rooms spread over two floors around a courtyard on which gives the prayer room.

This beautiful medresa is a stand out. The students quarters can get a bit cramped when large groups are present but the intricate carvings and tile work make this one is the more impressive architectural sights in Marrakech.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa was an Islamic college in Marrakech, Morocco, named after Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf (reigned 1106–1142), who expanded the city and its influence considerably. It is the largest Medrasa in all of Morocco, and was allied to the neighbouring Ben Youssef Mosque. It closed down in 1960, and the building was refurbished and reopened to the public as an historical site in 1982.

A fascinating place with amazing architecture. It was great to walk around and browse. Pretty cheap to get in. Would have liked more things to help self guide on a tour, but overall pretty interesting.
