Marrakech Holidays

Marrakech's central marketplace -- the Djemaa el Fna -- has been the meeting place for food vendors, snake charmers, Berber storytellers and travelers for hundreds of years. From the marketplace, windy streets and alleyways -- all pedestrianized, save for the odd donkey cart or motor scooter -- curl around the medina for miles, offering outdoor ... Read more
restaurants, hundreds of shops and Marrakech's answer to a hotel: the riad (a handful of beautifully tiled and painted rooms clustered around an interior courtyard, often with a pool). The call to prayer from the minaret of the statuesque Koutoubia Mosque adds to the allure of Marrakech's fascination. Visitors round out a day with a visit to a hammam (Turkish bath), the sumptuous Majorelle gardens or a stroll through the Jewish quarter. Marrakech is close enough to the fabled Atlas Mountains that adventurous souls often head into the mountains to explore stunning natural landscapes like the Ourika River Valley.

Begaa Tours was more than what I expected. My husband and I booked 12 nights with BT they picked us up from Tangiers then went to the lovely blue city of Chefchaouen, this was one of out favourite towns, the medina is easy to navigate and so pretty set in the hill. Fes which is overwhelming and amazing city with so much history, we were very thankful to Ahmed for organising a guide for the day in Fes this gave us the best of Fes. Then off to the Sahara for a few nights with a stop in a town called Midelt, which sits between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas Mountains with oases along the way. The camel ride and night under the stars was very welcome to switch off and connect with our surroundings. The following day Ahmed our tour guide took us to his family village and namesake of his tour company, Begaa Village, we felt privileged and humbled to have a glimpse into their lives.

We saw ancient kasbahs on the road of 1000 kasbahs and climbed the best of them all Ait Ben Haddou before we came to Marrakech and then off to Essaouira on the coast, another pretty town and lovely easy to get around medina. It was great to see Morocco from Medinas, Sahara desert and then to the coast the diversity of this country is magical.

Ahmed is to be commended as he is the only person from his village of about 50 families and his generation to put himself through school then University with the help of his family and now operating a tour business, a Berber man setting a great example for the next generation.

I have no hesitation recommending Begaa Tours

Marrakech is a beautiful city. It is riddled with culture and gorgeous architecture. As a tourist, however, do be careful of the locals around the Souks. My boyfriend and I explored Morocco for a week and on our first day, we got ripped off twice. The first time, two men with a baby monkey and a baboon was thrown on me and they refused to take them off until we paid them. They stood in front of us and wouldn't let us leave, this was very upsetting as we are both REALLY against animal cruelty and these animals were clearly distressed, with chains around their necks. The next we asked someone directions and they lead us for about 5 minutes and then demanded money, and wouldn't stop following us until we paid him. You quickly learn but I do wish someone warned us. Also, be sure to never pay the price that they are saying at the market, it is usually 3 x the price. I highly recommend taking a few days out to go to Essaouira. My boyfriend and I are both vegetarian and it is very easy to find vegetarian food, which we were pleasantly surprised by, when I read previous reviews it said vegetarians should not be excited by the food. I found the local food delicious!!

Hamid took our group of four on a tour of the desert near Erg Chebbi Dunes before embarking on a camel ride and night in a desert luxury tent. Hamid from Original Morocco Tours is fabulous! He drove us to a Bedouin tent home and explained local customs in easily understandable English (He speaks Berber - his first language, Arabic, French, and Spanish as well). He took us to a mining operation, local market with fabulous spices (South is known for the more aromatic cumin and generally stronger spices) and Gnaoua musical performance. We also visited a local artist's cooperative, fossil cutting and polishing operations, and took a 4-wheel drive only path to a beautiful lake. Hamid has worked with camels and knew the best place to send us for a camel trek. We could not have asked for a better guide- honest, kind, easy-going,flexible, experienced and very knowledgeable. He can arrange a tour anywhere in Morocco. We had a wonderful time-highly recommended!
