A major pilgrimage centre for Hindus, this ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. This ancient temple was restored in the 14th and 17th centuries after Islamic invaders had plundered the temple. The majestic gopurams (towers) on all four sides are covered with stucco images of deities, figures from Hindu mythology, saints and scholars of the region. The southern tower is the tallest rising to over 170 ft and is one of the iconic symbols of the state of Tamil Nadu. Apart from the religious importance, the temple is also a fine exhibition of south Indian architecture with lavishly carved stone pillars and mandapas. You could also have some delicious laddus or sphere shaped sweets in the temple.

Madurai is famous for it’s markets and temples. The most prominent is Meenakshi Amman temple; it’s 14 towering Gopuram entrances striking the skyline over this ancient temple town. Featuring approximately 33,000 sculptures, there’s plenty to see. Witness timeless ceremonies of worship and get access to the kitchens, where volunteers cook for the thousands of pilgrims daily. Around the temple, explore the entirely separate covered banana market, wander the vegetable markets and visit the stunningly vibrant flower market by dusk. To lay your head to rest, Taj Madurai occupies a hilltop overlooking the entire city. Head to the restaurant for a taste of South India on a specially crafted platter.

Remove your sandals and step back in time by entering the massive, majestic Meenakshi Aaman Temple. The smells of incense and ghee will hit you right away as you explore the many hallways of the structure, a holy destination for millions of Hindu pilgrims every year. After you've donated a rupee to the temple's elephant, and received a good-luck tap on the head with its trunk in return, continue on to the inner portion of the temple, built around a large tank of water filled with lotus flowers, to see why this place was one of only two in all of India to be nominated for the "New Seven Wonders of the World" (the Taj Mahal was the other). You'll see enormous murals portraying stories from ancient Hindu texts, sculptures of deities covered (respectfully) in balls of ghee butter (to keep them cool in the heat), and maybe even the procession bringing Meenakshi and Shiva together for the evening. A truly magical place where you could easily lose track of time and spend an entire day.

One of the best examples in the world of traditional Dravidian (South Indian) temple architecture, the riotously decorated gopuram towers of this temple have to be seen to be believed -- adorned with an incredible collection of deities and animals. Beyond that, this temple is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in South India, and is an excellent place to get into the swing of the subcontinent's spiritual side. Bring a camera, but be forewarned that only Hindus are allowed into the innermost sanctum (though this is only a small part of the temple complex).

A very fine example of Pandya architecture. The tank, golden gopuram (tower) and the grandeur is spell-binding. A must-visit.
