Who does not want a Café con Leche in the Plaza Mayor? Historic plaza surrounded by restaurants, some of which mark up their prices due to the location. You don’t have to walk too far to find something cheaper.

A crowded square in Madrid that holds events and performances. It's very crowded and from my experience, full of gypsies and pickpockets.

I had so much fun showing the Plaza Mayor to my friend Karen when we traveled around Spain together as students in 2009. You get such a sense of Spain's storied past and grandeur standing in the center of the Plaza.

Lovely public square surrounded by pretty buildings, and with plenty of outdoor cafes that offer great opportunities to people watch. I especially like the ornate ironwork that can be seen on many of the balconies facing the square

It's for sure a site to be on everyone's to go list in Madrid. The atmosphere inside the square is different from the crowded surrounding.

A good place to spend some idle time just admiring the architecture and watching people go by while enjoying some tapas and sangrea.

The place is somewhat deserted with not a whole lot to do. Feels mostly like a flea market with locals trading collectibles such as stamps, coins, bills, pop bottle caps, etc. A few random vendors roam the plaza selling balloons and other toys for kids.

Stroll by the adjacent streets and enjoy medieval Madrid.
Typical food on the place is the squid sandwich!

It's rather easy to find your way from Puerta del Sol to Plaza Mayor. Once there, you are immediately taken in by how vast the square really is. It is a touristy spot, but still very enjoyable.

Central square in Madrid. Have a coffee or enjoy some tapas as you take in the ambiance and do some people watching. Afterwards, you can wander off in various directions to explore the city. Intriguing lane ways beckon, promising new delights.

The Plaza Mayor was built in the early 17th century when the Hapsburgs were running the country. In middle of the square is an equestrian statue of Philip III, who was the Spanish King when the Plaza was built. It was the site of bullfights and proclamations from the later, Bourbon Kings.

always busy no matter what time of day or what part of the year. it's a central place to congregate like most plaza mayors in spain. this one is slightly different as there are bright red hues colouring the exteriors. one of the more beautiful ones in spain.

The food is decent, since it is more of a tourist destination, but the view and architecture around it is amazing! You could imagine what it must have been like in the past centuries. Great for people watching.
