Spain's capital city is as lively and vibrant as you'd expect. Majestic boulevards thrum with life until the early hours, and the sprawling Buen Retiro park feels like an open air gym. With an impressive collection of art museums (and tapas bars), Madrid is bound to impress culture vultures. Nightlife seekers will find plenty to enjoy here, too – this truly is a city that never sleeps.

          Where to stay in Madrid

Madrid is a huge city, and finding your neighbourhood is an important first step to finding the best hotels. We've put together a quick guide to some of the most popular areas.

Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol

If you want to be bang smack in the heart of Madrid's action, look for hotels on these two squares. Free walking tours kick off from Plaza Mayor, which is lined with tourist-focussed restaurants, bars and shops. All of Madrid's top attractions are within strolling distance, including the Mercado San Miguel food market and the Teatro Royale. This is also a great neighbourhood for high street shopping. There's a huge selection of hotels near Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, including Hotel Plaza Mayor, The Hat Madrid, and Petite Palace Posada del Peine.

          Barrio de las Letras

Also known as Huerta, this neighbourhood sits between Atocha and Sol. The name means 'the literary neighbourhood', and it's where some of Spain's most famous writers once lived. Today the cobbled streets are home to independent boutiques, as well as some low-key bars and restaurants. The main street, Calle de Atocha, runs in front of it. This neighbourhood is ideal if you want a bit of nightlife, but don't want to be in the centre of the action. It's also near the Buen Retiro Park – ideal for avid joggers. Hotels in this area include the Tryp Madrid Atocha Hotel, Catalonia Atocha, and La Posada de Huertas.

          Salamanca

Salamanca sits at the northern point of Retiro park, and is one of Madrid's most exclusive neighbourhoods. Foodies will love staying in Salamanca, as it's home to some of the city's best fine dining restaurants. Another gastronomic attraction is the Platea Madrid, a food market located inside an old theatre. Fashion lovers will enjoy browsing the racks (or peeking through windows) on the Golden Mile, the city's designer shopping area. Salamanca makes a great base for culture vultures, with attractions such as the National Archaeological Museum and the Lázaro Galdiano Museum. Hotels in Salamanca include Catalonia Goya, Wellington Madrid and VP Jardin de Recoletos.

          Malasana

Also known as Universidad, Malasana is Madrid's student neighbourhood. This is a great location for budget travellers and nightlife seekers. The bars here are relaxed and unpretentious, so and it's one of the best places to party like a local. Hipsters will love the vintage shops and quirky attractions in this neighbourhood – for example the Conde Duque cultural centre, which hosts open-air movies during the summer months. If you want to be in the heart of it, look for hotels near Plaza del 2 de Mayo: this is where Madrilenos meet before a night out. Hotels in Malasana include Courtyard by Marriott Madrid Princesa, Dear Hotel Madrid, and Mercure Madrid Plaza de Espana.

          Chueca

Chueca is Madrid's LGBTQ neighbourhood, but is a popular nightlife spot for everyone – no matter their sexual orientation. Sleek, trendy bars with terraces are the perfect place to stop and grab a gin and tonic. Chueca is next to Gran Via, Madrid's main street, so hotels in this neighbourhood are also handy for sightseers and business travellers (if you don't mind being kept awake by local revellers). By day, the area is great for shopping – it's mostly cute indie boutiques. This area is also home to one of Madrid's best food markets, the Mercado de San Anton, which has a fantastic roof terrace. Popular places to stay in Chueca include Only You Boutique Hotel Madrid, Room007 Chueca Hostel and The Belvedere.
