This is a lovely hotel located in the historic center of Madrid with decor and a general vibe that reflects its location. The room I saw was very regal and spacious, with a large bathtub and a gorgeous large window that opens up to the square below. The decor scheme was elegant (think elaborate drapes and a light yellow and burgundy color scheme with a printed carpet) and the room was spotlessly clean.

The hotel has a conference room on the top floor (though it feels a bit more like a dining room), and I'd recommend taking the stairs up! Though the half-glass elevator is also very beautiful, the wooden staircase is beautiful and illuminated by a very regal series of candelabras.Though there are no other common areas, the lobby has a very large lounge space with a glass ceiling that allows you to see through to the top of the hotel, and an adjoining bar.

In warmer months, there's an outdoor terrace just outside the hotel offering generous lunch specials and your standard selection of drinks and tapas. It was positively buzzing on a Thursday afternoon.

Central hotel although it seems to be hidden and tucked away through the twists and turns you may take to get there, especially by foot. The lobby is inviting, decorated nicely and the terraza outdoor area, complete with food items to order, makes a nice option for dining before heading out to see the nearby sights. Once inside you’ll be blown away by the size and the high ceilings, at least I was because from the outside, the building didn’t look like much and for sure didn’t look like it had a high ceiling capacity. I love high ceilings. But maybe that feature isn’t important to the average person. Anyway, this hotel, I think is a good pick moreso for the ambience.

Additionally, this hotel is a hop, skip and jump away from El Mandela in Opera!

This traditional hotel is steeped in charm and located just a few minutes' walk from Sol and Gran Vía.
When I walked through the front doors I couldn't believe how quiet it was inside, the noise was completely shut out even though there was construction taking place when I visited. I love the outside terrace for dining and their menu was really tasty looking too even though I didn't get the chance to eat there.
The room that I was in was really big and there was plenty of space for a couple without getting in each others way!

Dublin

Loved it. Helpful staff who spoke good English, beautiful decor and smack bang in the middle of the old city. Make sure to check if breakfast is included in your room rate (apparently it is with some, isn’t with others) - but even then, I reckon €12 for a full hot breakfast is pretty good. Oh and don’t forget to visit the Monastery of the Barefoot Nuns right next door (didn’t see any barefoot nuns, but did see some incredible art).

Walking in the big ancient doors I was blown away. This place nails the balance between old world sanctuary and a modern sense of space and light. The bellboy said they’d recently done up the lobby. It’s a gorgeous atrium with far-up skylights - a perfect spot to sip a glass of Spanish red and graze on a few plates of tapas (which they serve from the lobby bar). Going up in the old cage elevator for the first time I got a wonderful whiff of dark varnished wood. The bed was big and soft (but not too soft) and the room, with its armoire and classic writing desk, was simple yet plush. Ask for a room overlooking the square - they don’t cost any more and the views are superb. In terms of amenities, there’s a gym but just don’t try and swing a cat. I did think the sauna was a nice touch - perfect for sweating away all the jamón and rioja...

Pleasant Hill

The Palacio San Martin was a fabulous choice for our recent 2 night stay in Madrid. It's centrally located and within easy walking distance to the Plaza Mayor, the Puerta del Sol, and other central Madrid sights. This nineteenth century building once hosted the U.S. embassy and later in 2001 was renovated to become the 4-star Hotel that it is today.

Our room was also very comfortable, relatively quiet, and safe. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful in answering the "usual" tourist questions. Breakfast wasn't included in the price, but that was inconsequential considering the neighbourhood.
