We really enjoyed out stay here - its quite a classic hotel. Since its near many embassies you get the feel a lot of political dignitaries have frequented these halls. Great location if you want to go the Stadium for football - walking distance. Also close to the new business downtown but need to take a cab to get to the old town historic center of Madrid. Instead of taking a taxi we got the Hop-on Hop off tourist bus and took several loops around the city. There is a stop just across the street from his hotel. Lovely staff in the Club Lounge as well plus a top notch hot brekky!

The Intercontinental had, hands down, the most comfortable bed I have ever had the privilege to sleep in. Soft yet firm, it was capable of taking away all desires to see Madrid in favor of disappearing in its depths. Aside from that, great service and a nice bar. It's a splurge, but if you're looking for a treat, this is a good one in Madrid.

If you want to stay in central-Madrid, close to all of the key sites and budget isn't a big issue then consider this hotel. It's luxurious comfort all the way, great service and location just cannot be beat. Highly recommend.

My advice? Splurge on a Club room and get access to the Club Lounge - it’s a high-class sanctuary within an already opulent hotel. Free drinks, free tapas, free breakfast, free newspapers and free internet (though it should be free for everyone) all within a refined gentlemen’s (and ladies’) club setting. Didn’t eat in the restaurant, but would recommend a drink in the garden. They’re about to do it up out there and, to be honest, it is looking a little tired. But even pre-renovation the garden is an oasis of calm and wonderful spot for a cocktail amidst the palm fronds and scented hanging herb gardens. I just hope when they renovate they leave the striking deco statute that scales the back wall. It has to be said, the hotel is a little more in the financial district than the tourist one. But don’t take taxis - master the metro. The nearest stop is only a two minute walk away and the line goes straight to Puerta del Sol. You’re in the middle of old Madrid in ten minutes tops. The gym is well-equipped, but if you prefer going for real jog then ask for one of the handy laminated jogging maps (complete with a cord so you can hang it around your neck while you’re pounding the pavement).

I’m a sucker for big beautiful hotels in the classic mould. And the InterContinental, a converted 18th century palace, fits that description to a tee. The circular lobby is sprawling and gracefully furnished, the ideal spot to sit, sip a G&T and chat or read. And the lobby merges seamlessly with the very dapper dark-wood and mirror-lined bar (give in to the artesenal tapas on display - they’re worth it). The lobby restaurant, while a little pricey, is a gorgeous strip of white table cloths and potted palms, bathed in light from the wall of glass that looks out to the garden. If you do decide to eat there, perhaps save the occassion for Sunday brunch, which the hotel is renowned for (again, it ain’t cheap, but I’ve heard it’s good). The room was large (plenty of space for those suitcases) and luxe. It exuded a touch of old-world charm without feeling dated or pompous. And although it faced the busy boulevard, I couldn’t hear a peep. They replaced all the beds a year or so ago, and from the moment you sit on it, it’s clear they spent some money. If it’s your first time in Madrid (or even if it’s not), listen to the old boys behind the concierge desk. They’re wise in the ways of where to eat and drink and will send you where the locals go, not the nearest tourist trap.
