It's very hard not to be enchanted by this hotel. As soon as you walk in, a poetic verse greets you on the electric blue carpet. A small plaque indicates that it forms part of the Small Luxury Hotels of The World, an accolade which it clearly merits.

Exuding elegance with a modern twist, The Hotel de Las Letras is luxurious, but trendy; it's clearly geared towards the world's glitterati and literati, but the overall feeling is still congenial and contemporary. As I sat in the hotel's bar, Bocablo, I was able to eavesdrop on conversations about gallery openings and debut performances of a play.

I was shown a room that had a hand-painted selection of poetic verses on the wall, and was told that this is a unique flourish that every room has. Rooms up to the fifth floor have balconies overlooking the magnificent Gran Via, and offer all of the finest in hotel trimmings, including Etro toiletries. The decor of the room I saw wasn't extremely memorable, but certainly tasteful and the ultimate in comfort.

The rooftop terrace doesn't have the most panoramic or sweeping views of the city, but the bar scene was happening and it is definitely a fine place to be seen. I'm told that famous people are known to stay here, and that didn't come as a surprise. Staff was discreet, knowledgeable, very professional, and I should ad - these were some of the best-looking, most pleasantly perfumed bell boys I've encountered in Madrid!

The hotel's restaurant, Al Trapo, is run by none other than the Michelin-starred Paco Morales. Bocablo, the neighboring bar, is a very plush place to have a drink or deconstruct a text.

It’s said that many writer or artist find refuge in this hotel on Gran Via (at least the porter who escorted me through the hotel on an exclusive tour told me) and by the looks of it, it’s not hard to see why. A beautiful coffee and full bar on the first level? A library away from the hustle and bustle of the lobby, cafe and hotel restaurant? Rooms that give you space to breathe and move about? A rooftop to gaze at the beauty that is the Madrid skyline? Yes please. All of the above.

I LOVED THIS HOTEL!
The hotel is in the perfect location, situated on Gran Vía and within walking distance of everything!
Animal lovers will be delighted to hear that the hotel is taking part in WWF's 'Check-Out for Nature' campaign so every guest has the option to add €1 to their bill at the end of their stay which gets donated to saving endangered species. It's a little change that makes a big difference!
The staff were wonderful and the porter who showed me to the room was really friendly and I was able to have a great conversation with him about the hotel.
The rooms are really spacious and have balconies overlooking Gran Vía, but are still quiet enough to relax in. There is a desk in the rooms and comfy armchairs if you want to take a few minutes to yourself to enjoy a quiet book. I absolutely love the decor of each room, including the quotes and poetry written on the walls.
The bar and restaurant are great for guests as well as non-guests and they've got a great atmosphere.
You have to check out the terrace and jacuzzi if you're looking to spoil yourself!

This hotel is in a great location. Upon checkin we were upgraded to a junior suite. The room was quite big by European standards. The bed was comfortable and the hotel provided free wifi.

Sitting in the light-filled hotel café, I noticed an English writer was being interviewed across from me about his new book. And a photographer was snapping pictures of the dapper gent as he spoke to a Spanish journalist. Which sort of sums up this place. Literary, elegant and refined - but thankfully not stuffy or pompous. The walls are dotted with quotes from famous works of literature (in several languages) and the café and bar walls are decorated with stunning big photographs of everywhere from Madrid to Petra. There’s also a library downstairs - it’s not huge (and sadly, I think I spotted a Wilbur Smith) but I’m sure you’ll find something to fall asleep to. The room was bright, spacious and tastefully done and the bathroom, with white tiled walls and ultra-modern fixtures, was one of the chicest I’ve seen in a hotel. Plus copies of Esquire and similar mags on the coffee table was a welcome touch. If you’re there in summer, be sure to head up to the rooftop bar (they call it the Air Lounge). The tables and sofas are surrounded by big beautiful pot plants that make it a very special drinking hole above the rooftops. By the way, the hotel has an agreement with WWF and you can donate an euro when you check out. Would definitely return.

The funky and hip hotel is conveniently located on Madrid's busiest street: The Gran Via. If you're looking to be in the center of all the sights, this is the place to be. The rooms feature modern decor and are surprisingly spacious (particularly for Europe). The hotel also boasts a rooftop terraza - perfect for grabbing drinks after a long day of checking out the city. Just be careful walking around at night on the Gran Via - it's a pickpocket's paradise!
