If the epitome of luxury and creme de la creme is how you prefer to travel, this hotel is for you. If the name wasn’t enough, the pink flowers in the shape of R bordering the entrance to the lobby, the chaise lounge to the right of the entrance or even the large, intricate, crystal chandelier prompted me for what was sure to be class and excellence. Room size surely won’t disappoint, as the hotel rooms are a bit on the larger side, so not typical for European hotels. Foodies will delight at this hotel, too. I could smell food wafting from the hotel’s on-site restaurant once I was in its proximity.

The Hotel Ritz is a name that resonates elegance and luxury, and the hotel carries it in every little detail.
First of all, I was greeted by the doorman who showed me in with a huge smile. I spoke to another gentleman behind the desk who passed on to a colleague of his who could answer some of my questions even better. The staff are multilingual, so you don't have to worry about not speaking Spanish!
The décor is lush and beautiful and taking it in makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. The afternoon tea on the patio is a special treat where you can enjoy tea and scones while listening to a live pianist as he serenades you.

Miravet

After years of previous mismanagement which had left this Madrid icon neglected, Orient Express have restored this grande dame to its former glory. Although a stay here is strongly recommended - but not to everyone's budget - do at least come for breakfast on a Sunday. If the weather is warm there are lovely tables out on the terrace. Good upgrade and welcome perks for members of the Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club.

I’ve stayed in five star hotels before. But this place really was a cut above the rest. The room was like something out of a bygone era - each piece of furniture belonged in a museum (use a coaster for that drink!), the sheets were embroidered and walls were ‘papered’ with cloth. Put simply, it felt like a royal apartment from a few hundred years ago - not how I’d do my place back home, but as a fairytale setting for your Madrid jaunt, it’s unforgettable. The bathroom was very modern, totally done in marble and with a fresh orchid to decorate (and L’Occitane amenities to boot). And call me old fashioned, but I kind of liked opening my door with a key rather than a swipe card (which half the time don’t work). If you’re there in warmer weather, check if there’s anything special planned out on the terrace. They often throw candlelit soirees - ‘Champagne and Jazz’ and gin & tonic themed nights, that kind of thing. If you’re not a night owl, I recommend at least setting aside an hour or two for tapas in the garden - comfy cane chairs, a canopy of trees, and Spanish jamon. Bliss.
